Re: How to Contribute to Open Source ??
Mostly just pick a project you'd like to support and dive in, I think. A good number of projects are hosted on sourceforge:
http://sourceforge.net/
One way to get started might be with debugging. For example, Debian is preparing a new major relase early in 2015, and will have a code freeze starting in one month, after which packages in "testing" need to be ready to become the new "stable". From that point, for the most part only bug fixes of "release critical" bugs will be allowed to the pending new release.
Well if you know how to debug, one thing you could do is try to find a bug that needs fixing there:
https://bugs.debian.org/release-critical/
But if you want to get involved with Mint especially, there are some suggestions here:

And Mint bug reports are located here:Code
Most of our development is done in Python and Glade. We also use Git for version control and APT/DEB for packaging. If you're comfortable with these technologies, don't hesitate to have a look at the code. If you think you can improve our applications or write new ones don't hesitate to suggest patches or to fork our git repositories.

You could start by reading the forums and helping out with people's problems as you are able to.
