Linux Official Exams

Post by superninja1981 »

Hi you all,

I have just begun this adventure in Linux, and I was wondering if there was any form I can get a certificate. I know you don't need a certificate to learn and there are hundreds of books out there. But in my case preparing myself for a kind of exam encourages me to take it seriously.

The thing is that I've found this site (Linux Professional Institute): http://www.lpi.org/linux-certifications

To get the junior level certification you need to pass these two exams, with the following content:

http://www.lpi.org/linux-certifications ... 1/exam-101

http://www.lpi.org/linux-certifications ... 1/exam-102

It seems to have schools all over the world, including 20 or 30 here in my country (Spain).

1. Is it any good?

2. Is there any alternative (a free one if it's possible)?

3. If there is no one, I was wondering that perhaps it'd be a good idea to create a new one, sponsored by Linux Mint. It'd be cool to integrate that in the wellcome screen, Linux Mint Academy or something like that. It could be a sort of online course and it could be a way to spread the word, you know. The course could be free, and optionally you can pay to take the exam. What do you think?

4. In case you all think it's a good idea, how could I send this suggestion to the Linux Mint team?

LPI is mostly interesting for yourself. If you want it to mean anything for job application, you go for Red Hat certification--those are recognized in the industry and will open doors to get a job. They are not free. You can see the exam objectives to figure out it those are a match for what you want to learn: http://www.redhat.com/training/certific ... ifications

Linux Foundation is later this year doing a free training: https://training.linuxfoundation.org/wh ... ummer-2014. Again, interesting for yourself mostly.

If this is just to brush up on your own skills, there are tons of free resources. Like http://www.tldp.org/ and http://en.flossmanuals.net/.

As for having a Linux Mint course, I think that's what the tutorials section here and on the Community website are for

I've just enroled in the LFS101x Introduction to Linux course you recommended to me. It looks great! :D And it starts on the first of August, so if somebody else in the forum wants to accompany me I'd be really pleased. If sb do so, please send me a private message just to be in contact during the course, to help each other or whatever.
