KDE next is shaping up nicely!

Post by xenopeek »

The third beta of of KDE Frameworks 5 was released this week: http://kde.org/announcements/announce-f ... -beta3.php. I've added the ppa:neon/kf5 PPA to Kubuntu 14.04 and installed the project-neon5 packages, including steps to remove LightDM and set SDDM as the display manager. Switched to Breeze window theme and Fusion widget theme. It's clear some more work is needed but I'm looking forward to a stable release next month.

Obligatory snapshot (click to enlarge).

I think it is looking very nice! I was never much of a fan of Oxygen -- dated look of boxes within boxes and too many gradients. This looks much cleaner. But Oxygen is I believe still the default for KDE next.

Not bad but it will not make me move toward KDE. These huge icons in the systray... Not for me

I really like the new KDE look by far the best most complete desktop in Linux ATM. and QT5 is quite promising technology.

Definitely has come a long way from the origional KDE4 which many despised.

I know the framework is in the arch repos though im still debating to try it or wait till the official... Choices Choices :?

I'd wait for the final release. I'm testing it on top of Kubuntu in VirtualBox. Not going to do it on my main install yet :)

I like the changes in 5.4 but I'm still wondering how good it can be? They will work a few years on it, then it will be stable enough for daily usage and they will announce: "We will be releasing Plasma 6 in a few months, get ready (users) beta testers!"

I do not use KDE so users can give us some insights on this. But I think KDE 5 is already pretty stable and can be used on a daily basis.

This looks good. I personally have always favoured KDE as it seems a very mature DE and works best on my hardware.
I tried Plasma 5 on manjaro in a VM and it worked very nicely - now just trying to be patient and waiting for LM version of Plasma 5...
