Debian Stable based distros

Post by dmhm »

LMDE is based on Debian Testing, a rolling edition. Debian stable (currently Wheezy), is a frozen Debian edition (with the exception of security updates).

The following linux distros are based on Debian Stable:
(Distrowatch search results for Linux, Live media, Debian Stable, not Ubuntu, Active). Be aware that more linux distros have been based on Debian than for any other base system and that some of those based on Debian Stable that have live media (so you can try them before installing) were created for special purposes and/or have different destop environments. The best (IMO) was SolusOS which is not longer active (and it's principle developer was a LMDE contributor).

Kwheezy (KDE) and Point (Mate) are the two non-comerical & non-specialized distros you could try although gNewSense (Gnome) would be an option if you don't need the non-free codecs, and a live Session iso of Debian itself can be downloaded with the GNOME, KDE, LXDE and Xfce destops: http://www.debian.org/CD/live/ and there is also Solydxl: http://solydxk.com/ and CrunchBang http://crunchbang.org/ if that's what yu want.

1. Kwheezy (31)
Kwheezy is a Debian-based Linux distribution with an intuitive KDE desktop and a good selection of GNU/Linux and open-source software. It also includes popular device drivers, media codecs and browser plugins, all pre-configured and ready for use at first boot.

2. Tails (38)
The Amnesic Incognito Live System (Tails) is a Debian-based live CD/USB with the goal of providing complete Internet anonymity for the user. The product ships with several Internet applications, including web browser, IRC client, mail client and instant messenger, all pre-configured with security in mind and with all traffic anonymised. To achieve this, Incognito uses the Tor network to make Internet traffic very hard to trace.

3. Point Linux (67)
Point Linux is a GNU/Linux distribution that aims to combine the power of Debian GNU/Linux with the productivity of MATE, the GNOME 2 desktop environment fork. Point Linux provides an easy-to-set-up-and-use distribution for users looking for a fast, stable and predictable desktop.

4. gNewSense (84)
A product sponsored by the Free Software Foundation, gNewSense is a Debian-based Linux distribution released without any proprietary and non-free components, and several enhancements. Notably, all proprietary firmware, restricted modules and Debian logos are removed. The goal of the project is to produce a totally free ("libre") Linux distribution.

5. Elive (85)
Elive, or Enlightenment live CD, is a Debian-based desktop Linux distribution and live CD featuring the Enlightenment window manager. Besides being pre-configured and ready for daily desktop use, it also includes "Elpanel" - a control centre for easy system and desktop administration. Elive is a commercial distribution; while the live CD is available as a free download, those wishing to install it to a hard disk are asked to pay US$15 for an installation module.

6. Musix GNU+Linux (127)
Musix GNU+Linux is a Debian-based distribution featuring a collection of free software for audio production, graphic design and video editing.

7. Matriux (140)
Matriux is a Debian-based security distribution designed for penetration testing and forensic investigations. Although it is primarily designed for security enthusiasts and professionals, it can also be used by any Linux user as a desktop system for day-to-day computing. Besides standard Debian software, Matriux also ships with an optimised GNOME desktop interface, over 300 open-source tools for penetration testing, and a custom-built Linux kernel.

8. ArcheOS (199)
ArcheOS stands for Archaeological Operating System. It is a GNU/Linux live DVD distribution (versions 1.x based on PCLinuxOS, versions 2 and 3 on Kubuntu, version 4 on Debian GNU/Linux), with specialist software for archaeological purposes.

9. Exe GNU/Linux (231)
Exe GNU/Linux is a Debian-based desktop Linux distribution. Its primary goal is to provide a Debian variant that ships with a slightly re-themed Trinity desktop environment (a fork of KDE 3), as well as several useful scripts and utilities. It offers LXDE as an alternative desktop. It uses the official Debian repositories, as well as the Trinity mirror for updating the desktop environment.

10. Venenux GNU/Linux (261)
VENENUX GNU/Linux is a South American desktop distribution based on Debian GNU/Linux and intended primarily for Spanish-speaking users. It adheres strictly to the principles of free software as defined by the Free Software Foundation.

11. Overclockix (270)
Overclockix started as a KNOPPIX-based live CD featuring a host of tools for network security, low-level hardware tweaking, burn-in applications, and distributed computing clients. It went dormant in 2005, but was revived again in 2011 as a Debian-based live CD "aimed at overclockers for stress testing, distributed computing and as a general Linux toolkit."

Good post!

It's unfortunate that Mepis, which still has no Wheezy-based release, can't be included on this list.

CrunchBang's really nice here.

Yep Solydk KDE here. As pointed out they also have Back Office and Business Edition to go with their KDE or Xfce versions.
And they have changed from Monthly update packs to Quarterly update packs based on Testing.
Testing is given another round of Testing by the Solyd team to find any other glaring bugs or deal with stability issues.
Gone thru 4 updates with zero issues went smoothly without a hitch.

Finding it pretty fresh as Dec. update gave me 4.11.4 KDE and a 3.11.2 kernel.
Pretty fresh 1 to 3 month old applications.

Any one who wants LMDE based on Debian stable should try PointLinux. It is based on Debian stable with MATE desktop.

Looks somewhat dubious. Translations right off Google Translate, empty forums, one maintainer (apparently).. I'd rather deal with Debian breakage and install MATE myself (which I've done - XFCE is terrible on Debian).

I'd like to see a Linux Mint Xfce release based on Wheezy (stable).

MX-14 is a special version of antiX developed in full collaboration with the Mepis Community, using the best tools and talents from each distro.

I gave SolydX XFCE a try in VirtualBox for a few days, two weeks ago, and really liked it. So a couple of days ago I finally got around to installing it onto my old Sony Viao laptop. The laptop needed something lightweight on system resources, but isn't yet old enough to require Puppy (I have an IBM ThinkPad X23 that runs MacPup). Seeing your signature tag a while back made me curoius, wondering "what's SolydK?" since I'd never heard of it and hadn't noticed it on Distrowatch. I'm glad you put that SolydK tag in your signature, because I might not have found it otherwise! :D

This is a good one. Lots of nice tools included, too.

I've tried and installed it. I'ts good, stable and very usable, although not very appealing aesthetically. Their community is small but active.
Active Distros in my computers: LM21.1 (Mate,Xfce); MXLinux (Xfce)
