This is a wild shot, but...what graphics card do you have and what drivers do you use?
It could very well be a graphics issue. I've had some recent weirdness in other Mint versions, as well, although not this particular issue. I wish I had aimed to buy a computer with Nvidia graphics, which is what I had before. I never ran into problems with it and Linux Mint made it easy to manage the drivers.

Anyhow, this new computer says on Kinfocenter:

Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller: ASRock Revision 09

Driver: Tungsten Graphics Inc.

Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel (R) Sandybridge Desktop

Open GL/ES version: 2.1 Mesa 7.11.2

Kernel Module: i915

Since I don't know what I'm talking about, it may not be what you were looking for, but really, I don't want you to spend time sorting out my graphics baloney. I love what you've done here. The system is working fabulously well. I rarely change desktop backgrounds, and even if I do, this is not a big deal at all. Please don't worry about it anymore.

Thanks.

PS: My computer has been seeding all of Saturday and overnight. Now it says the transmission is "Stalled" and I was wondering if I need to restart when it says that?

I see the missing module errors or ones like them every time I boot up my laptop with Nvidia graphics. Does anyone have information on how I can check them and resolve the errors? I can't snag a shot with my camera because the screen clears and starts Plymouth too quickly, and disabling Plymouth doesn't make the lines stay up any longer.

can I have icon only task manager on this KDE? its like dockbarx on gnome, or taskmanager on windows 7(dunno its called task bar or taskmanager). I still cant find it on synaptic..
I can help there. Fancy Tasks can do that (it's what I use), or you can install Icon Tasks. According to this Make Use Of article it's being merged into KDE 4.8 but they have a nice tutorial on how to get it to work with KDE 4.7. One note about Fancy Tasks though, I can't figure out how to add widgets to it so my screenshots show my panel sized to be a dock with Fancy Tasks on the panel itself. I know there's supposed to be a way to get plasmoids on Fancy Tasks but I'll be dammed if I can figure out how to do it.

It seems to be a Plymouth bug:

Thanks Schoelje. I knew if I did some digging or asked the question I'd find the answer. I've subscribed to the bug and I guess it'll just be a matter of waiting for the plymouth update to hit testing. It looks like it hit unstable (Sid?) on 21 June.

There were some issues for which I added a workaround:
1. Quassel does not connect to the mint channels by default.
2. Printer Configuration hangs when adding a new printer.

Issue 1 is solved.
Issue 2 however, is a bug...

You can find the workarounds in the Bug List at the beginning of this thread.

Hi Schoelje,

This is a great surprise to me. I have discussed and asked in several posts about LMDE KDE.
You made my dream come true.
Currently downloading the 32 bit, (currently 7/7 peers), and I'll keep seeding as long as I can to help.

I'll install it on virtualbox and keep you posted.

Hope to see it official soon.

Thanks again for your efforts.

For everybody downloading and seeding the iso's, giving feedback and especially, using the unofficial LMDE KDE: thank you very much.
I've put in a lot of time and effort and that's why I'm so happy because there is a group (although still small) of people that appreciate the result.

A reminder to all: I'm still working on improving the unofficial LMDE KDE. All issues (and solutions/workarounds) are listed under "Bugs List" at the beginning of this thread, so keep track of that.

If people are interested: I'll post the (direct) download links if I have the iso's available.

Hi Schoelje,

I am obliged to report back after I installed (but on a virtualbox)
Booting live media was real fast, installation went fine, but I can't comment on responsiveness and speed because I started Nepomuk and indexing eats a lot of cpu and memory. But all appears great and generally better than other KDE distros.

The only thing I humbly suggest/ hope you could do is related to KDE itself, (so I wonder if it is relevant or not), KDE is a bit "heavier" than Gnome or Mate, I'm not that expert and I don't know what can be done exactly, but perhaps if you can consider it, I'd suggest a solution, simply reduce or eliminate few eye candy, few very fancy or very luxury features, that may lead to a better KDE.

I know this suggestion should be said to the KDE guys, but I'm doubt they'll be interested in it. I thought maybe if you can do it it will help you get a wonderful distro.
But as for now, I've just used it for few hours and I'll keep you posted if you don't mind.

Keep up the great work.

I finally took the plunge today and changed my sources.list to point to Debian Testing (keeping the mint packages repo, of course). The changeover went completely without ill effects. While using the update pack system might be "safer" for some users, I personally like LMDE the way it was originally presented in 2010 based on testing.

Edit: A bonus to using testing repos: KDE has now reached version 4.8.4 in testing.

Ok, as you can see, I commented out the update pack sources:

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ debian main upstream import
#deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest testing main contrib non-free
#deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/security testing/updates main contrib non-free
#deb http://debian.linuxmint.com/latest/multimedia testing main non-free

deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ testing main contrib non-free
#deb-src http://ftp.debian.org/debian/ testing main contrib non-free
deb http://security.debian.org wheezy/updates main contrib non-free
#deb-src http://security.debian.org wheezy/updates main contrib non-free
deb http://www.deb-multimedia.org testing main non-free

In addition to changing the sources.list file, I changed the apt/preferences file making all the priorities 500.

Thanks a lot tdockery97, I'll try your repos. But out of curiosity, why and how "I changed the apt/preferences file making all the priorities 500"
I have tried several times to change default LMDE repos (on virtual machine) and everytime I end up with an unusable system! Would priorities be the reason? or maybe I had conflicting repos!
I'll try your way and report back.

i would just suggest to replace

Code: Select all

deb http://security.debian.org wheezy/updates main contrib non-free
with

Code: Select all

deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free
following the same pattern tdockery has in the rest of the sources.list.

if you stay with the testing string your installation will follow testing, if you follow wheezy in a few months you'll have debian stable 7 (sort of).

Good catch, zerozero. That one I had just blindly copied from craigevil's giant Debian sources list without thinking.

Thanks Schoelje for this great distro. Its nice having a pure KDE LMDE rather that having to install KDE on top of the regular LMDE. :D

I'll test it in virtualbox and if everything goes well, I'll install it on my laptop.

This night I finished a version with Plymouth and even all bugs listed in the Bugs List have been solved.
The reason for the implementation of Plymouth is to protect the inexperienced user from the geeky stuff (I personally like very much) underneath.
Because Plymouth in testing has some issues (as BostonPeng found out) I used sid for this version.

Screenshot
Image

The coming week I'll be testing this version and I hope I'll be able to have it ready for download at the end of next week.
Some things I'm not able to test: I don't have a system with ATI.
There were no changes in that regard so I don't expect any other behavior then with the previous versions.

If anyone has experience with Plymouth (I know BostonPeng has) I'd like to hear from them, especially regarding their experience during upgrades.
I never had much trouble, even with nvidia, but configuring Plymouth was not very straightforward, so any input is valuable. Perhaps we must conclude not to implement Plymouth at all or wait until the sid version hits testing.

There are actually updates for Plymouth in today's testing du. I haven't applied them yet so I don't know if anything will break. I'd love to get your Plymouth theme to give it a spin on my system. a nice blue LMDE splash could kick my sunrise theme off its throne.

Testing is really time-consuming!
I've done about 80% of total testing.
The biggest hurdle has been the coding of live-installer. It seems that live-installer hasn't been made with KDE in mind so some things were not working as expected. (If you're interested in the technical details: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 8&t=106318).

Some things have changed:
  • * The extra applications were removed (to stay as close as possible to Linux Mint KDE).
    * Plymouth is added with a KDE theme (see previous post for a screenshot).
    * The Caledonia splash theme was changed to make it look more Minty.
    * All issues listed under Bug List were solved.
So, just to let you know I'm still on schedule: ready for download at the end of next week.
