Booting Up

Post by tuxpenguin8 »

My PC has linux mint 16 MATE, the computer uses a 2.20GHz 32-bit Intel Celeron processor, and 2GB of RAM. But, I've booted it up just now and it seems a little slow and sluggish compared when I turned on earlier today. I know that linux shouldn't become slower over time, so is there a slight possibility that linux might slow down over time, and are there any reason why it is slower, Or is it just me?

OK, it may become slower by adding lots of icons to the desktop or starting too many services or too many applications
--even though it (the OS) can multitask quite well.

You don't say, so I assume with less than 4GB of RAM, you have taken the more reasoned approach and installed the 32bit version of this Linux release

You may also want to check some tweaking info (Ubuntu, or Mint) for ideas/references
--and you can speed up applications either by assigning (allocating) more RAM to them when running or using Linux prelink mode
http://blog.ubuntu-tweak.com/2008/09/16 ... tweak.html

And check the services you have running on startup
http://www.craiglotter.co.za/2010/01/12 ... -terminal/
--there is a GUI (system selection) that allows you to look at running services and stop them if you wish
http://www.craiglotter.co.za/2010/01/12 ... -terminal/

You can also remove any applications or OS features you don't need, such as HP printer (HPlip), if you don't have an HP printer or scanner
--bluetooth
-wireless
and any applications you haven't been using (such as pick one graphics program and stick with that one)

You may also want to install bleachbit (a utilty/program) that can clean up debris on your system
http://bleachbit.sourceforge.net/
https://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/application ... bleachbit/
--it should be available from your package manager

It hasn't gotten slower over time, I just got slower instantly. Like, I went on my laptop, shut it down, went on it again, and it was noticably slower than the last time I booted. But recently I have downloaded some antivirus software. Personally I like speed, and the normal boot time is acceptable but not great, but now it is a little slow and just below acceptable. So if there is any more advice that would be appreciated. And on one of the links, I tried the command and quite a few daemons (things running in the background) had a (-) sign, not a (+) sign, is that good news or bad news.

But why would it slow down? When I first heard of linux, I heard it NEVER slows down over time, I watched this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HD6nqQrJx78 It would be nice to know. And if you know of anywhere there might be any help to newbies like me, please put the on: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=164310 Even if it is a tiny bit of info that will help me in some way, I'm only a new user.

Here is a link on starting and stopping daemons: http://www.craiglotter.co.za/2010/07/26 ... -terminal/

You can install BleachBit from the software centre.
