Max 1024x768 resolution, but monitor needs 1680x1050
I have installed Mint 17.3 on my Dell OPTIPLEX 755 mini desktop (only DVI).
The LG L225WT monitor (only VGA) is connected via an DVI-VGA adapter.
With windows 7 it did give an 1680x1050 resolution, but with Mint 17.3 , he reports the monitor-type as UNKNOWN , gives only 800x600 or 1024x768 pixels. iso the 1680x1050 as it does work on windows.
Is there any solution ?

You need to post some additional information. Use these commands in the Terminal:
3. Is your system a dual-boot with Windows?
4. Use this command to open the “Xorg.0.log” file, or open the Log File Viewer:
That command is for Cinnamon or Xfce. If using MATE, then change gedit to pluma.
Press Ctrl+A to select the entire file contents. Right click on the screen and select “Copy”. Don't save it to a file. Open the Mint Forum reply window and select “Code” in the menu. Paste the copied lines between the two code words.
If you have problems posting that long file, then upload it to pastebin.com by using this command:
Post the URL link that displays in the Terminal window.
Code: Select all
1. inxi -Fx
2. xrandr

gedit /var/log/Xorg.0.log

I' am not using dual boot with windows, just interchanging HD (easy with this dell optiflex)
Re: Max 1024x768 resolution, but monitor needs 1680x1050
Use this command in the Terminal to create an xorg.conf file:
In the empty opened file, add these lines:

I am in the same boat, I believe I had tried this before, and was not able to get back into Linux
but here is my stats, I just need the screen resolution to be bigger, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Re: Max 1024x768 resolution, but monitor needs 1680x1050
karma65,
You need to post some additional information.
1. Use this command in the Terminal: xrandr
2. The brand and model number of the monitor, and how is it connected, including any adapter.
3. Use this command to open the “Xorg.0.log” file, or open the Log File Viewer:
Press Ctrl+A to select the entire file contents. Right click on the screen and select “Copy”. Don't save it to a file. Open the Mint Forum reply window and select “Code” in the menu. Paste the copied lines between the two code words.
If you have problems posting that long file, then upload it to pastebin.com by using this command:
Post the URL link that displays in the Terminal window.

Re: Max 1024x768 resolution, but monitor needs 1680x1050
Just to advise I did read the earlier post on the fix, and I did try that, but there is still the same screen options,
very strange, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Re: Max 1024x768 resolution, but monitor needs 1680x1050
You didn't give the model number of the 19 inch LG monitor. I'm assuming the native resolution is 1680x1050 for both?
This line is in from the log file:
You can't use the output name VGA1 in your xorg.conf file. The connected output names from using xrandr are DVI-0 and DVI-1.
Open the xorg.conf file and remove all the lines and then add these lines:
Log out and back in. Check in System Settings > Display for the 1680x1050 resolution.
If there is a startup problem and you can't get to the desktop, then reboot and select Recovery Mode at the GRUB boot menu. If no menu shows, then hold down the Shift key while starting, or keep tapping the key. In the menu, select “root - drop to root shell prompt”. When asked for the root password, just type your user password. Then change the file permissions to read and write by typing:
Then remove the xorg.conf file by typing this command:
Then type this command and wait: reboot

If there is a startup problem and you can't get to the desktop, then reboot and select Recovery Mode at the GRUB boot menu. If no menu shows, then hold down the Shift key while starting, or keep tapping the key. In the menu, select “root - drop to root shell prompt”. When asked for the root password, just type your user password. Then change the file permissions to read and write by typing:
Code: Select all
mount -o remount,rw /
Then remove the xorg.conf file by typing this command:
Code: Select all
rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Re: Max 1024x768 resolution, but monitor needs 1680x1050
I am having the same issue, the highest resolution I can run is 1360x768 when I need 1920x1080. Can you assist me?

Re: Max 1024x768 resolution, but monitor needs 1680x1050
I am no expert at this, but it looks like your new xorg.conf file should be:
Code: Select all
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
HorizSync 24.0 - 94.0
VertRefresh 24.0 - 87.0
Modeline "1680x1050_60.00" 119.00 1680 1728 1760 1840 1050 1053 1059 1080 +hsync -vsync
Option "PreferredMode" "1680x1050"
EndSection
Section "Device"
Identifier "Device0"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "Monitor-DVI-I-1" "Monitor0"
EndSection
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1680x1050"
EndSubSection
EndSection
