Computer: HP Pavilion dv4
OS: Linux Mint 9 XFCE (isadora) 64-bit
Soundcard: HDA ATI SB (alsa mixer)
Problem: Cannot record, playback works. Getting the message "Waiting for sound system to respond" when clicking on File | Open Volume Control in the Sound Recorder.
The microphone worked when I tried a different Linux distro (Ubuntu 10.4 64-bit).
What is the right configuration? What is needed to make the microphone work?

Re: Microphone not working
Be sure to use aplay/arecord when testing the mic (if you are that's great). Avoid using another program (e.g. Skype) as to eliminate
any software problem.

Re: Microphone not working
Installing pavucontrol simply installed another program doing exactly the same thing as the Sound program that is automatically installed in Linux mint. It gives you some options to turn things on or off, but it does not change the way drivers are already installed. Hence it did not give any help in getting the microphones working.
