Update Manager thinks I have Firefox installed and wants to update it. Why would it think I have Firefox installed?
Thank You,
Mark.

Re: How does Mint know what's installed?
Well, don't you have it then? After all, it's part of the default Mint Xfce installation.markfilipak wrote:Update Manager thinks I have Firefox installed and wants to update it. Why would it think I have Firefox installed?

Re: How does Mint know what's installed?
Yes, but you may have installed several web browsers, right? So that's no answer to my question.markfilipak wrote:I run Pale Moon.
Anyway, you can always launch Synaptic and let it search for Firefox packages. Or let the terminal enlighten you:
Code: Select all
which firefox

If you haven't even noticed it so far, how is it a problem?
If your issue is solved, kindly indicate that by editing the first post in the topic, and adding [SOLVED] to the title. Thanks!

This should do it:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get remove firefox

Re: How does Mint know what's installed?
That worked. And "which firefox" returns nothing. But Update Manager still insisted I needed to "Upgrade" Firefox. So I rebooted. Update Manager still insisted I needed to "Upgrade" Firefox. So I set it to "Ignore updates for this package".Pjotr wrote:This should do it:Code: Select all

Update Mgr. wants to "Upgrade" an application that's not even installed. Not good.
Thanks so much for your help.

Re: [SOLVED] Uninstalling Firefox
Well, I tried this. It seemed to work. Then I took Firefox off the Update Manager ignore list and Firefox "Upgrade" reappeared. So I put Firefox back on the Update Manager ignore list.austin.texas wrote:The command I use is:After running that I don't get bothered with any of the frequent updates for a program I don't use.Code: Select all

?????
Oh, well.

Re: [SOLVED] Uninstalling Firefox
Lol. You're just going to have to pay Clem more than Mozilla does, then. (JUST KIDDING! )markfilipak wrote:Well, I tried this. It seemed to work. Then I took Firefox off the Update Manager ignore list and Firefox "Upgrade" reappeared.
I'm pretty sure that I've seen upgrades appear in the list for graphics cards (and companies) that my laptop doesn't even have... But those upgrades are likely at least for files that are installed.
I thought I might have seen a Nautilus (Nemo? Something besides Thunar...) one appear at some point. But I'm old, and easily confused (lol).
You could try removing the prohibition, then installing the upgrade, then uninstalling Firefox (via Synaptic Package Manager).
Web-browsers are considered standard items these days. The default one in a Mint Xfce installation is Firefox. I wonder if there's some setting in your setup that still lists that as being the case. I don't know how that would have any bearing on whether or not you receive updates for it, though...

Re: [SOLVED] Uninstalling Firefox
Most likely the updates you see are related to the language packages for firefox.markfilipak wrote:Then I took Firefox off the Update Manager ignore list and Firefox "Upgrade" reappeared. So I put Firefox back on the Update Manager ignore list.
I have described the problem and the solution here.
