Window Manager selection (Xfwm4 + Compton)

When selecting Xfwm4 + compton option in Desktop Settings > Windows > Window Manager, is it necessary to add the two steps suggested in this howto:

• 1. add compton -b to Settings manager > Session and Startup > Application Autostart
  2. create home/.compton.conf file ?

My own tests show that Step 1 above is not required.
I still did Step 2, however I'm not sure whether the config file is doubling up on an already existing configuration (file search does not come up with other compton.conf file).
Can someone clarify?
