Themes for xfce/compiz

Post by Zephyroth »

Is there a possibility to use themes on xfce/compiz?

I didn't find any solution for it. But I'm quite new to Linux. The amount of desktop enviroments, windowsmanagers etc. is a little bit confusing.

Althoug I registered 3 years ago, I just used Mint on my Laptop. But now I switched from Win10 to Linux on my "big machine". As far, I'm satisfied with it, but I want a little bit more eye candy.

Zeph

First, congratulations on your switch to Linux.
I have not used Windows in a long time, but what I have heard about Win10 is pretty scary.

It is easy to get new themes.

Yeah, Win10 is very scary. I don't trust it, after all I heared. Maybe I'm paranoid, but... I simply can't tell what Microsoft is doing with the collected data...

Anyway, thanks for the link. Is there an instruction how to install? Many themes are for Emerald, which afaik is not further developed.

I don't have xfce. I have Cinnamon. But you should be able to access themes with Menu > Preferences > System Settings > Appearance > Themes > Add/Remove Desktop Themes.

For a download from
http://xfce-look.org/index.php?xcontent ... e-look.org
create a directory called /home/yourusername/.themes
Don't forget the . in front of themes > .themes
Download the theme and unzip it into that directory. It will then be listed in the available themes.

The link from chrissuninchina

seems very useful for xfce.

No, if you were paranoid, you'd have fled the Microsoft bunker many, many versions ago  . Like, IDK... 15 years back?

EDIT: BtW, is your issue that you just aren't sure how to work with themes in Xfce in general? Or that you're having trouble using them with a non-Xfce window manager (IOW, when using Compiz instead of Xfwm)?

The behaviour is sometimes quite strange, but after a good hour I managed to get some themes to work.

There are many places where you can put your themes:

/usr/share/themes (that is the place for the default themes)
~/.local/share/themes (that's what was mentioned in the how-to)
~/.themes (is that was is finally used by my system)

Very interesting is the fact, that the themes do not appear in the menu, when I drag them into one of these folders. I have to drag the tarball directly into the menu, the system unpacks it and places the theme into ~/.themes. Then the themes work, most likely. There are still some unpretty things, such as light backgrounds, where it should be dark etc.

I just have to search for the right theme.

Thanks!
