Hi,
Archive Manager is almost unusable for me because the UI layout is messed up, does anyone have the same problem ?
Here is a screenshot showing what I mean... It's practically impossible to select anything on that dialog !
Also, while trying to use the Screen Capture tool, I stumbled upon another problem/bug: when I click on "Validate", my whole computer freezes for like 10s ! It's annoying because my cats love to walk on my keyboard and always seem to step on the "Print" key ! :-\

Re: Archive Manager (File Roller) UI problem + Screen Capt.
I thought it was a bug with Xfce but I also tried Mint Cinnamon and it seems that File Roller is also broken here :-\ Does nobody use this tool ? How is it possible that no one reported that problem yet !?
Re: [UNSOLVED] Archive Manager (File Roller) UI problem
Problem confirmed, I just tried it now (Jan 26 2016) on Mint XFCE 64 bit. Unusable.

Hi "GoustiFruit",
It would help to have more information on your system's setup.
Please run the console terminal commands "inxi -Fxzd", highlight the results and copy & paste them back here.
I just checked my Archive Manager (File Roller v3.6.3) in Linux Mint KDE 17.3, and it also has the unchangeable file and folder selection boxes when "adding files" when creating an Archive. I do have a small window showing 2 lines, rather than one like your image shows. But, I was still able to create an archive.
There are other archiving programs, like "Ark" (usually the default Archive program), "PeaZip", etc... which work really well and are integrated into your file managers as well, thus making (creating) archive files super easy to do.
PeaZip for Linux 5.9.1 - use the "GTK" for Cinnamon, Mate, Xfce, use the "QT" for KDE.
http://www.peazip.org/peazip-linux.html
"File Roller (Archive Manager)" is great for viewing (opening) archives, and searching for files within large archive files, but I don't usually use it for creating Archive files (archiving files). And, I do not like the small "add files" window either, or the fact that I cannot even resize that window. There are plug-ins for integrating this into some file managers as well in the Software Manager or Synaptic Package Manager (SPM).
Perhaps there is a newer version available....

File Roller 3.12.2-1ubuntu1~utopic3 - at bottom are 32bit and 64bit easy install ".deb" files.

Re: [UNSOLVED] Archive Manager (File Roller) UI problem
Hi @phd21,
Clem admitted in a recent newsletter (in the comments section) that the version used in Mint is faulty. I already installed a newer version (must be the 3.12.2 you mentioned), the bug is corrected but you get the new UI from Gnome with a combined titlebar/menu which doesn't not really integrate with Mint (I think Clem also talks about this in the latest newsletter). I find it strange that Mint includes by default a software that is known to have such a bug !? :-\ BTW, File Roller *works* but is practically unusable if you need to visually select a bunch of file/folders.
I also already tried different file archivers, including PeaZip, but always had some issues with each of them. Didn't try Ark because I didn't want to install Qt/KDE dependencies.

Re: [UNSOLVED] Archive Manager (File Roller) UI problem
My "file-roller" looks completely different: v 3.16.4 The GUI is mostly blank.
And can't add any files to a new archive, either ("Add" button stays greyed-out after selecting some files).

Please edit your original post title to include [SOLVED] if/when it is solved!

Re: [UNSOLVED] Archive Manager (File Roller) UI problem
By "unchangeable," you mean that you cannot grab one of its edges (presumably, the bottom one) and drag it down? What happens if you maximize that window?phd21 wrote:I just checked my Archive Manager (File Roller v3.6.3) in Linux Mint KDE 17.3, and it also has the unchangeable file and folder selection boxes when "adding files" when creating an Archive.

Re: [UNSOLVED] Archive Manager (File Roller) UI problem
file-roller_3.10.2.1-0ubuntu4.1_amd64.deb will update it to a working version with no drastic changes. Also fixed is the problem of file-roller refusing to create an archive output to another folder other than where the files being archived are.
