Support for Xfce Maya until 2017

Post by Fritx »

ppa.launchpad.net/xubuntu-dev/xfce-4.10/ubuntu reached end of life on 26. April 2015.
What about the support for Xfce Maya until 2017?

Hello, Fritx.

The Mint webpage Linux Mint Releases promises "Long term support release (LTS), supported until April 2017" for all editions of Linux Mint 13. This includes Linux Mint 13 xfce as well.

The official Linux Mint 13 xfce release has never depended on any PPA. This includes the xfce-4.10 PPA that you named. Mint 13 came with xfce 4.8.
The xfce-4.10 PPA was the only unofficial way of updating xfce from 4.8 to 4.10 on Mint 13.

This PPA is dead now, because Xubuntu 12.04 was only supported for 3 years, unlike Mint 13 which is supported for 5 years.
The consequence for Mint 13 users who upgraded xfce from 4.8 to 4.10 is that they are stuck with the xfce 4.10 that they have.

In case you should re-install Mint 13 from scratch, you would be stuck with xfce 4.8 even, because the Ubuntu 12.04 repos do not offer any newer xfce software for Ubuntu 12.04 / Mint 13.

Yet, there is hope (and a certain risk as with any PPA):
The developer Pavel has backported xfce 4.12 to Ubuntu 12.04 / Mint 13. ppa:spvkgn/xfce-precise. Go to: XFCE 4.12 for Ubuntu Precise 12.04
I admit that so far I have not added this PPA and not installed xfce 4.12 on my Mint 13 xfce. So I cannot tell whether Pavel's backport works flawlessly.

With respect to any other software, except xfce:
All Mint 13 editions get the same software updates which Ubuntu 12.04 systems get from the Ubuntu software repositories as well. Ubuntu 12.04 will be supported till April 2017.

HTH,
Karl
