XFCE64 slow to boot/login - but sometimes it's not..

Post by pacman67 »

I'm running mint xfce 17.2 (64bit version) on an elder acer aspire 5738Z (Pentium dual core @ 1.2Ghz with 2G ram)

I don't expect it to win any speed awards, but often it boots VERY slowly, taking upto 2 minutes to get from power on to the desktop . Most of the time is spent starting at a black screen (between the Linux mint splash and the desktop being loaded).

However, about 1 time in 4, it boots quickly and gets to desktop in under 50seconds.

I don't _think_ I'm loading any unusual services at boot (nothing deliberately added)

Can you suggest what it might be?
Is this typical behaviour? (it's not on my other MintXFCE 17.2 installation - but that is only the 32 bit version (and on a slower processor))
What other information would it be useful to post to help you diagnose my issue?
Should I just 'move on' and freecycle this laptop as no amount of 'care' is going to bring it consistently under a {say} minute boot time
Should I go back to the 32bit version (Isn't the 64 bit version supposed to be faster)?

Thanks in advance.
Paul

Can you see what kind of deamons also startup in the background? Check that. Also check if some deamons have a delay set before they even startup, that might slow down as well.

Also can you provide us the output of the following terminal command:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz

Open the Log File Viewer program, then check the syslog , the timestamp leads every line. This will at least help you narrow down the time consuming culprit.

One possibility is you have programs (usually audio, but I've seen others) running in background because you click "x" (upper right corner) than file-quit (or ctrl-q). Look at your panel and see if you have anything running.
Right-click the icon -> quit to close them.
