[SOLVED] Mouse pointer freezes in LinuxMint 17.1 XFCE

Post by matajaz »

Hi,

I have had Linux Mint 14.1 with cinnamon for a couple of years on my old PC.
I haven’t experience any communication problem at all with that SW release.

Yesterday I decided to install Linux Mint 17.1 with XFCE.
I looked great initially but as soon as I started using Firefox and opening new tabs I got problems with my mouse.
The mouse pointer freezes. I can use the scroll wheel to scroll the web page but nothing else.
Closing Firefox (Alt-F4) does not solve the problem.

Initially I thought mouse batteries ran out out power but replacing them did not help.
The only thing that helps is power cycle the PC.

I use a Microsoft Wireless Laser Keyboard 6000 v2.0 (wireless keyboard and mouse from Microsoft).

Any workaround to avoid this problem?

From dmesg printout:

If I could avoid this problem using cinnamon or any other desktop environment instead of XFCE, I do not know.

Try this; Firefox > Preferences > Advanced > Uncheck the "Use hardware acceleration.." checkbox. Restart Firefox.

Hi,

Unfortunately it did not help to disable HW acceleration.

Here is a web page which crashes Firefox and leaves me with a frozen mouse pointer:

Not sure what could be causing this? Have you tried a different usb port for your mouse transceiver? That page is working for me in both my Mint 17 Xfce and Mint 17.1 Xfce machines.

This does not seem to be a specific XFCE-problem, but probably a problem with th FF-profile (if I understand it correctly, that this problem does not appear in other applications).

Although a different matter the way for analyzing is the same as I described here yesterday.

Please stay for your feedback in your own thread here.

Hi,

I just noticed that the problem with the mouse can happen anytime.
i.e. opening terminal windows.

I found this information in the syslog:

It seems to be a bug.

There seems som be other reports about the same problem.

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=77207

But that issue is solved and closed long time ago and the correction does not work for me.

Please generate an overview of your system like this:
- launch a terminal window and make it full screen, to avoid chopped lines;
- copy/paste this command into the terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
(if you type: the letter F is a capital letter)

Press Enter.

Copy/paste the output in your next message.

I filed a new bug report esterday to freedesktoporg
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=90686

I already got an comment.
The Mesa SW is old:
"Comment # 6 on bug 90686 from Matt Turner
Mesa 10.1 is ancient at this point. Please try mesa-10.5.x."

The questions now are: why are Linux Mint using old Mesa SW and how can I upgrade to latest and greatest release?

Hi,

I updated the to the latest graphics driver and I haven't seen the crash since. (Have just tested for 5 minutes but that was more than enough earlier).

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo reboot now
