Unable To Upgrade XFCE in Petra - Can I Transplant it?

Post by jimwg »

Greetings!

I'm unable to upgrade my Mint 16 Petra's installed XFCE 4.10 to 4.12. I used the standard methods:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xubuntu-dev/xfce-4.10
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xubuntu-dev/xfce-4.12
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install xfce4

and

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xubuntu-dev/xfce-4.10
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xubuntu-dev/xfce-4.12
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

and

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xubuntu-dev/xfce-4.10
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop

But no go. Neither does it work with apt changes to get 4.11. Last year I did somehow manage to upgrade Petra on another drive from 4.10 to 4.11 but I don't know whether that was via a different ppa or whether all these ppa have shut off XFCE 4.11/12 updates. If there's a way to "transplant" the XFCE 4.11 on one drive to another to "upgrade" its XFCE, I'm up to that if anyone has directions how.

Any tips much appreciated!

Most all of Mint 16 and it's Ubuntu equivalent servers have been taken down, as Mint 16 is now obsolete.

Still using Linux Mint 14, 15, or 16? Upgrade to 17 asap!

I remember hearing, years ago, of a way to assemble a .deb package from an installed application. Don't remember the details; perhaps a Google search would turn it up.

What you want is dpkg-repack. Read the man page on it.

Thanks for swift response.

I'm not a techie, I just follow sage techie advice to the letter. I don't know what a dpkg-repack is or how to get it or to use it. Also thanks to Puppy mavens for your suggestions too!

But does Mint 17 come with XFCE 4.11 or 4.12?

It probably ought to come with XFCE 4.10, since Mint 17.x is - I think - called a "Long-Term Support" version by its developer, and the current stable version of XFCE is 4.10. 4.11 is a development version... and - I think - the XFCE developers are hoping to release 4.12 some time around the end of this month or in March.
