I think I've seen this problem mentioned before but I don't think I've seen a solution that works.
When I click on a URL in certain programs(*) the system 'forgets' the default browser.
- My default browser is 'google chrome'
- If I'm using 'e-book viewer' (or LibreOfficeWriter) and click on link I get the 'Choose Preferred Application' with 'No Application Selected' (see file_2)
--- I select 'Google-Chrome' (or 'Preferred Debian Application')
--- I read the link OK
When I want to use Google-Chrome again (via menu or Icon) - It comes up 'Google Chrome is not your default Browser' (file_1)
- I click OK and everything works until I click on another similar link and the same thing happens.
* programs with this behaviour (not exhaustive)
- e-viwer
- LibreOfficeWriter
- Clementine
Programs that work OK :
- Browsers - Firefox, Google-Chrome etc
- Thunderbird
nb Some programs will use a specific (not necessarily default) browser
- Bluefish
It's not a major problem but its irritating.
I tried resetting default browser in various ways but the problem keeps coming back.
The problem seems to go back some months.

Re: Default Browser not 'remembered'
Have you messed w/ MIME settings? If not, try
"start" -> settings -> MIM Type editor

Thanks for response
No I don't think they have been changed
HTML is set to 'Google Chrome'
Is it only QT based programs that are having problems ?
