XFCE won't start without a monitor
Hi,
I want to have the XFCE display manager to run without a display device. I have setup the vnc to run on boot but since xfce fails to boot into the desktop I can't access the pc through a vnc client. How can I set it up to run without an active display device?
I am on LinuxMint 8.

Re: XFCE won't start without a monitor
Well, I think you do need an initial monitor on the computer in order to set it up for any VNC connection: you do need a VNC server or a terminal connection
--so maybe you can start the XFCE computer in terminal mode, or bite the bullet and temporarily attach a monitor to that computer in order to get your system and the services you want

- This is the normal method for any OS that requires any setup, if some service is needed to function on it..

Re: XFCE won't start without a monitor
Ah, Never mind, I wanted a version of Linux mint that runs on a Flash Drive (4GB) and so I opted for Mint 8.
Re: XFCE won't start without a monitor
Buy an USB stick w/ 8 or 16 GB and use a more modern version of LM. All my 10+ sticks are at least 8 GB. Prices have came down.

Well, I have SOLVED the issue.
However, asking me to buy an 8GB+ flash drive is not a helpful reply!

Mint 7 was nicer than Mint 8 was ..
- most people do buy the larger usb sticks, these days, in order to run a linux O/S on them .. ..

Suggestion: Use the old USB for something lite like systemrescue, puppy linux, crunchbang, tails, old files, etc (depending on your need) and spill out under $10 for a 8GB USB sticknevinjohn wrote:I have this old usb drive that I don't want to throw away, instead make it useful so...

Prices came down ever since I got my first 8GB USB stick several years ago. LM 8 is too old and bounded to have security bugs. Run something more current.
We are talking under $10.

p.s. I put stuffs like tails iso, old files on my old 1GB USB sticks.
