XFCE won't start without a monitor

Post by nevinjohn »

Hi,
I want to have the XFCE display manager to run without a display device. I have setup the vnc to run on boot but since xfce fails to boot into the desktop I can't access the pc through a vnc client. How can I set it up to run without an active display device?
I am on LinuxMint 8.

Well, I think you do need an initial monitor on the computer in order to set it up for any VNC connection: you do need a VNC server or a terminal connection
--so maybe you can start the XFCE computer in terminal mode, or bite the bullet and temporarily attach a monitor to that computer in order to get your system and the services you want
  • This is the normal method for any OS that requires any setup, if some service is needed to function on it..
The only time that might not be an option is if you are not close to that machine(computer) or cannot have someone temporarily attach a monitor

Thanks, DrHu for the reply. Meanwhile I was googling the issue too and http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions ... ed-monitor solved the issue!
Anyways I am so thankful for your reply. :)

That's amazing; Mint 8 has been unsupported for 3 years 8 months, lol. Which version of XFCE does it have?

Regards,
MDM
Mint 18 Xfce 4.12.

Ah, Never mind, I wanted a version of Linux mint that runs on a Flash Drive (4GB) and so I opted for Mint 8.

Buy an USB stick w/ 8 or 16 GB and use a more modern version of LM. All my 10+ sticks are at least 8 GB. Prices have came down.

Well, I have SOLVED the issue.
However, asking me to buy an 8GB+ flash drive is not a helpful reply!

Mint 7 was nicer than Mint 8 was ..

- most people do buy the larger usb sticks, these days, in order to run a linux O/S on them .. ..

Suggestion: Use the old USB for something lite like systemrescue, puppy linux, crunchbang, tails, old files, etc (depending on your need) and spill out under $10 for a 8GB USB stick

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_c_ ... Caps%2C272

Prices came down ever since I got my first 8GB USB stick several years ago. LM 8 is too old and bounded to have security bugs. Run something more current.
We are talking under $10.

p.s. I put stuffs like tails iso, old files on my old 1GB USB sticks.
