[SOLVED] Replacing Software Sources

Post by and003 »

I am having trouble updating my LinuxMint installation because of software sources that are no longer working or can't be accessed. Where can I find new software sources?

For information, I am using LinuxMint Maya 32-bit with XFCE. I am also including documentation of one attempt to make an update. If further information is required, let me know.

Hello, and003.

Telling from the output of "sudo apt-get update" only the repository entry which points to removed is wrong, because it names "maya" where it should name "precise" instead.
Please, post the output of the command line

Code: Select all

inxi -r

In the sources list file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list prefix a hash # to the line

Code: Select all

deb http://packages.domain.com/ saucy main
Result:

Code: Select all

# deb http://packages.domain.com/ saucy main
Note:
The sources list files can only be modified with root privileges. So you will have to run a commandline like this in order to edit the file:

Code: Select all

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list
On Mint 16, you can also use the "Software Sources" from the Mint Menu and simply untick (disable) the dummy repository http://packages.domain.com/.

I used your idea and it seems to have worked. I was able to update my system. In the meantime, I would like to update my sources.list file to make sure this doesn't happen again. I know that I will need to replace the packages.medibuntu.org link and possibly the archive.removed links as well. I will also need a list of additional repositories, since I don't have one in my sources.list.d directory. I am including the code of the sources.list file I have now. If you need further information, let me know.

Code: Select all

deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise-security main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ precise partner
deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ precise free non-free

# deb http://archive.removed/ubuntu precise-removed apps
# deb http://archive.removed/ubuntu precise-removed games

Hello, and003.

The sources.list file can only be modified with root privileges. So you will have to run a commandline like this in order to edit the file:

Code: Select all

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
Change your sources.list file to read

Code: Select all

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ maya main upstream import
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise-security main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ precise partner
# deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ precise free non-free

# deb http://archive.removed/ubuntu precise-removed apps
# deb http://archive.removed/ubuntu precise-removed games
In case you wish to activate the removed repositories, remove the "# " characters in front of the 2 removed lines.
Next run

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
This will reveal whether any error has slipped your attention.

Note:
You can disable/enable existing repository entries inside mintupdate => software sources without editing the sources.list file manually.
I will also need a list of additional repositories
Why? If all the repositories which your system has got to query for software updates are listed in the file sources.list then there is no need to have an extra file /etc/apt/sources.d/additional-repositories.
There are several ways of achieving the same goal. Do not let yourself be confused by the fact that in older Ubuntu/Mint versions most things were added to the main file sources.list, whereas in newer Ubuntu/Mint versions the trend is using several separate sources list files.

Kind regards,
Karl

Hello, MtnDewManiac.

Basically you are right. When launching a graphical application like gedit one should prefix either gksudo (not on KDE) or kdesudo (only on KDE) instead of sudo.
Nonetheless I can assure you that I have been careless more than once and used

Code: Select all

sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
and no unwanted side effects resulted from my politically incorrect activities. - This will not be the case with all other graphical applications though. So prefixing gksudo or kdesudo will be the proper way of doing it.

Cheers,
Karl
