No WIFI on HP pavillon

Post by Stosskraft »

Hello all, I just purchased a new 17 HP Pavillon about a week ago. I was running Kubuntu 14.04 but found it extreamly slow and buggy compare to some other releases I have used for them. This morning I installed Mint KDE and I find it much more responsive and the install was much fast. However, there is no WIFI. It is not even showing up in the connection manager (just blank) though I do have WIFI in the house and it worked with Kubuntu.

How to I go about getting WIFI to show so I can connect to it? Right now the internet is plugged into the computer but this is only so I can ask this question :)

Please run this command:

Code: Select all

wget -N -t 5 -T 10 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/57264241/wireless_script && chmod +x wireless_script && ./wireless_script
It will create a file, wireless-info.txt or wireless-info.tar.gz
Post the result here in Code tags, or paste the contents at http://pastebin.ubuntu.com then post the link here.

Thank you for the replies, I tried this and it worked:
ensure you have the appropriate chipset:

lspci | grep RTL8723BE

02:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8723BE PCIe Wireless Network Adapter

compile and load specific driver by running following commands:

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic build-essential git
git clone http://github.com/lwfinger/rtl8723be
cd rtl8723be
git checkout 604aa9058fb9e5bb1cf571c99989d081f8fc8b9
make
sudo make install
sudo modprobe rtl8723be
Now I have at least wifi but I am not sure it is 100% stable, should I still try the script?

I am loving how much more responsive mint is to Kubuntu, big difference on same hardware.

Hello, I am finding that my wifi is dropping the connection randomly, yet when it is plugged in it doesn't do the same. Any suggestions how I can improve this?

You might want to change your router settings to WPA2-AES instead of the mixed mode with TKIP

Another thing to do is

Code: Select all

echo "options rtl8723be fwlps=N ips=N" | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723.conf
If you look at the wireless_script, you will find that some members from ubuntuforums created it- krytarik, wild man, chili555, and I think varunendra

Hello, I need some more help with my WIFI. I am traveling around SE Asia at the moment and I find it really really unstable. I cannot use it for more than 10 minutes at a time when connecting at hotels and cafes, yet my android phone is stable as a rock. Any ideas how I can fix this? Is changing to an older mint an option?

I am doing more work online at the moment and I need a stable WIFI connection, when plugged in it is fine. I cannot change any setting on the router as I am travelling now.

Ideas?

You might need to change the crda info

Code: Select all

sudo iw reg set 00
or

Code: Select all

sudo iw reg set CN
Yours is set to US, which only allows channels 1-11 and likely some other limits

The list of Country codes can be found http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_3166-1_alpha-2

Hello, I just wanted to confirm. Should I run the terminal codes you provided? I am in Laos at the moment and this is what the link is providing: LA Lao People's Democratic Republic 1974 .la ISO 3166-2:LA ISO country name follows UN designation (common name: Laos)

Internet is spotty here at the best of times :) I just need something more stable as I use my laptop for work and Linux is unheard of here.

I would try the

Code: Select all

sudo iw reg set LA
to see if you have a better connection after a reboot

Hello, your terminal code helped but I still have internet stopping and only reconnecting on restart, it just doesn't seem to happen as often.

Any ideas?

It might help using

Code: Select all

 echo "options rtl8723be swenc=Y" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723.conf

And reboot

I need to remove the last code.. it is now only q few seconds that i have wifi and then it deactivates. Once this happens it does not reappear in the network manager.. i have to reboot for it to connect again only to deactive half a minute later.

Is this an issue with 14.04 lts? 12.04 was rock stable?

I don't know but I think the rtl cards are a bit hit and miss since there is only one kernel developer working on them

To get rid of the last change

Code: Select all

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8723.conf
and delete

Code: Select all

options rtl8723be swenc=Y
save, exit program and reboot
Locked
