I noticed in Kubuntu, i was able to play a movie in the information panel (F11) of the file manager (Dolphin). It doesn't work in KD4 here, only the sound is heard. Do I need install something special ? (mplayer is there). I found mplayerthumbs in synaptic but it doesn't seem to do anything.

Version we have ( 4.14.2) does not work. It was corrected in next version 4.14.3 but it never get to Ubuntu repos. Kubuntu switched to KDE5 after this version (4.14.2).
I guess you will have to wait four years for this to be fixed (this is LTS). Two weeks ago I checked all Debian repos and all still have this buggy version.
You can compile dolphin 4.14.3 and it will work.

So finally, this fix is available with Kde 4.14.13 through an Kubuntu ppa.
