alternating wallpapers on different workspaces

alternating wallpapers on different workspaces

Postby johanhartman on Wed Sep 23, 2009 4:39 pm

Is it possible to have different wallpapers on different workspaces, i.e. wallpaper one on workspace one, wallpaper two on workspace two, wallpaper one on workspace three, wallpaper two on workspace four?

Probably not for the same user login..

Yes you can, at least on KDE Mint-5.

Check main menu > appearance > background > setting for desktop (see screenshot). Should be a drop down that will let you choose which wallpaper for which destop that you want it to be on. May vary on different Mint DE's though. Also be advised this type of setting will use more memory as well than with a single wallpaper for all desktops.

That's fine for KDE, but what about gnome? Or can I do it in compiz somehow?

That's why I asked, I cant see any obvious way to do it but perhaps there is someone who could tell us how to do it the less obvious way (in gconf maybe??).

Somebody told me you could do it in Compiz, but I haven't found it in CCSM yet. :(

All you can d from CCSM is to set one wallpaper for all workscreens.

I did post "may vary on different Mint DE's though" if you saw it. You could try KDE as well, you may end up liking it better.

I try to keep info around for when I help users here, but Im not always successful. Anyway it is said that you can do this with compiz, but at the cost of desktop icons. Compiz needs to have the the wallpaper plugin installed which probably means a later version than what some users may have? You can check out this guys video at youtube (which is not real good) but may show you some tips. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsrfXzRC1F0

Also I have read before that there were several Dev's working on this Gnome problem in the background. This feature that y'all are after is one of the most highly requested features that Gnome users ask for. The only reference in my info folder that was left about this subject was this: http://gsocblog.jsharpe.net/ Im sorry, I havent had time today to research this for you so this is all that I have on hand ATM.

Google gnome desktops+multiple wallpapers That should get you some good hits guys.

If I find anything else I will try to post it asap.

Had no idea this idea would be so popular :)

Anyway there still doesn't seem to be any good solutions;

http://tutorialninjas.net/2008/05/09/multiple-desktop-backgrounds/ this didn't work for me, apparently Gnome still draws its own desktop over compiz'
http://wallpapoz.akbarhome.com/ not at all an adequate solution, much too slow.
http://gsocblog.jsharpe.net/archives/15 will take a look at it later but some commentors suggest it is not much more than what wallpapoz does...

Anyway it seems that this is one of those that you'll just have to wait and see. Maybe it'll be implemented in Gnome 3 :?:

That YouTube video made it work exactly:

Compiz Settings:

Enable Wallpaper, select four wallpapers (or however many desktops you have!).

in terminal type:

gconf-editor

Go to Apps, then Nautilus:

Uncheck :Show Desktop.

You lose all desktop icons and desktop functionality, but it works.

Here's proof:

Not having the desktop shown is a out of the question, but still I tried it and it didn't work.

I have inquired about this also.
It worked on an earlier version of ubuntu (6 or 7) , right out of the box with no loss of desktop icons or functions. I found it very convenient, I consider it a great tool.

Having a wallpaper related to what i was working on for each desktop makes switching desktops much easier (and less chance of closing the wrong desktop) as opposed to just having a bunch of squares or a title on each square of the workspace switcher.

i dont know if different wallpapers is possible on newer versions of ubuntu as i have been unable to make a internet connection with ubuntu since 8, which is when i switched to mint.

How do you get the background image with the cube floating like that. I know its probably a really simple setting but I am a bit daft sometimes.
