Linux Mint Mate 17.3 32-bit and Netgear A6210 <Solved>

Post by Tsiatsia »

Kwe/Good morning (at least in New England),

I have a refurbished Dell Optiplex GX-620 with Linux Mint Mate 17.3 32-bit installed. There is an ethernet port built onto the mother board but that appears to be dead. I never tried to use it under Windows so I'm not sure if it ever worked. My ethernet cable to my router is a couple days old and works on my laptop so I know the cable is okay. I'm more interested in adding this to my home network via wifi.

First, I downloaded the latest drivers from Netgear for an A6210 USB dongle. This worked quite well under Windows XP and Windows Vista but I'm having a bit of trouble getting it running in Linux Mint 17.3 that I just installed.

I've tried to get as much information as possible in hopes of getting help and hopefully all the terminal commands in the suggestions:

Code: Select all

At this point, the machine has NO ACCESS to either ethernet or wireless so adding software will be problematic.

I managed to download ndiswrapper from another machine and installed it. I followed the instructions for ndiswrapper and pointed it to the directory which included the .inf and .sys files. These show as RT2870 so I presume it's some type of RealTek technology inside the dongle. ? ? Then I checked to see if it was installed.

Code: Select all

administrator@administrator ~ $ ndiswrapper -l
bcmwlhigh5 : driver installed
rt2870 : driver installed
	device (0846:9053) present
The bcmwlhigh5 is for a Netgear WNA3100 dongle that I also tried using ndiswrapper but it isn't recognized when I plug it into a USB port.
The RT2870 is for the Netgear A6210 wireless dongle appears to be recognized.

In the unlikely event the first driver I loaded was causing a problem, I removed it with:

Code: Select all

administrator@administrator / $ sudo ndiswrapper -r bcmwlhigh5
[sudo] password for administrator:
administrator@administrator / $ ndiswrapper -l
rt2870 : driver installed
	device (0846:9053) present
Oddly enough, on one of the sites I visited, it specifically listed the WNA3100 as one that worked in Linux 17.1.

Then I tried mintwifi.

Code: Select all

administrator@administrator ~ $ sudo /usr/lib/linuxmint/mintWifi/mintWifi.py

Below are some commands from a different thread on wifi drivers not working.
administrator@administrator ~ $ modprobe ndiswrapper
administrator@administrator ~ $ ndiswrapper -m alias "eth1" >> wlan0
administrator@administrator ~ $ sudo ndiswrapper -mi
module configuration information is stored in /etc/modprobe.d/ndiswrapper.conf
administrator@administrator ~ $ sudo ndiswrapper -ma
module configuration information is stored in /etc/modprobe.d/ndiswrapper.conf
administrator@administrator ~ $ iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
At some point last night, I did get the network icon to show that networking devices were present but after a reboot, it now says no network devices present and the only option is VPN.

I hope someone can fill in the missing piece as I'd love to get this up and running.

Ke welalin/Thank you very much!

I would find a TP-Link WN722N 150Mbps or something like https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/ ... tpe-nusbdb or choose a USB wifi device from https://www.thinkpenguin.com/catalog/wi ... g-gnulinux as Netgear doesn't provide Linux support for that model

Welalin/Thank you for your reply, JeremyB. While my roomies have convinced me that it's not worth my time to try and "force" the cards I have to work, I think the cards at the thinkpenguin site are inflated. I've seen some 300 Mbps Intel cards that are less and are apparently Linux ready. The only bad thing is they apparently aren't sold at any stores in my area, only online.

Try to get one of these models:

Intel® Wireless WiFi 5150AGN
Intel® Wireless WiFi 5100AGN
Intel® Wireless WiFi 5300AGN
Intel® Wireless WiFi 5350AGN
Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N 6230
Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 1030
Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 130
Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N 6235
Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N 6205
Intel® Centrino® Ultimate-N 6300
Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N 6200
Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 1000
Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 100
Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 135
Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 105
Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 2200
Intel® Centrino® Wireless-N 2230

Some of the newer models may need downloads and kernel patches to work. The Intel 7260 may be safe but there could be a few that are unsupported yet in LM 17.3

Final post for now.

I ended up ordering an Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 for Desktop - network adapter. I'm sure it will be late January when it arrives (after the Christmas rush). I'll post as to whether or not the seller was correct that it will work with Linux.

:)

Most of them work fine as I have a couple of them and LM 17 can use them but there might be some that won't but I could modify source code and build a kernel module that will support them
