[Solved] Wireless Adapter Setup

I may be confusing apples and oranges here but, I have questions on how to set up my wireless adapter. I never use wireless unless I travel and take my laptop. Situation is:
My netgear router is configured for wireless and set up with my own user name and password and WAP encryption and password for guest who want wireless and I believe it is working great and protected because you do need to enter the password to access the net via the netgear wireless router.
I bought a new laptop a few months ago and I can connect to the internet using the wireless adaptor if I desire. However, I can't find any means of setting up the wireless network adaptor in the laptop. It seems to me that a setup should be performed on the laptop wireless adaptor to set encryption and password but I can't see any place to do this. If I'm in a motel and log in to their wireless network I will be completely unprotected right?

I have searched forums but nearly everything there is concerning the wireless not working. Mine works great. I did see the post by Clem telling us to run mintwifi and post the results.

Could be I'm nuts but would appreciate some clarification on this.
