Driver for NETGEAR AC 1200 / A 6210 wifi adaptor?

Post by Lighthouse Boy »

Hi,
I have just got a Netgear AC 1200 / A6210 wifi adaptor.LInux Mint Cinnamon does not recognise it straight away like it did with my old adaptor (which broke).

I tried clicking on the exe file on the discv that came with it. A box came up and disappeared in a microsecond, so could not read what it said.

I've searched the web for a driver but with no success.

Please can someone explain - in simle terms (I'm not that bright) where I can find a driver, or what I should do to make it work.

Thanks in advance.

Please generate an overview of your system like this:
- launch a terminal window and make it full screen, to avoid chopped lines;
- copy/paste this command into the terminal:

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
(if you type: the letter F is a capital letter)

Press Enter.

Copy/paste the output in your next message.

Hi Lighthouse Boy,

1. That is not the full results of the command "inxi -Fxz", you did not use the dash... Still need the full results of "inxi -Fxz" and "lsusb" from your terminal with the adapter plugged in.

2. Here is some information from what I quickly researched:

Not 100% sure, but It seems that Netgear is not supporting Linux (see #3 below), but any Wifi adapter that does support Linux should work with any wifi router, including Netgear routers. Below this is a link to Amazon.com which shows some WiFi dual band AC adapters that are compatible with Linux (read reviews; I would recommend ones that have a higher speed than 300 mbps because Dual band AC should be faster than that on 5ghz band, some advertise 800+mpbs, 1200+ mbps, etc...) Obviously, the Adapters in the Amazon.com links below can be purchased elsewhere too, like Best Buy, Target, Office Supply stores, etc... (Amazon.com has great prices too!)

Linksys Dual-Band AC1200 Wireless USB 3.0 Adapter (WUSB6300)

3. Articles / posts on the Netgear hardware you mentioned:

From Feb '2015 Re: Netgear AC1200 Dual Band Wi-Fi USB 3.0 Adapter
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2265150
Have not received a response form Mediatek.

Did get a response from Netgear about the problem and asking if I had the right chipset info:
Response from NETGEAR
"Hi David,

I have looked into your case and I apologize, but we are not in the position to disclose that since it is considered proprietary information. Moreover, our adapters only work with Windows and MAC OS and do not support Linux OS.

I suggest that you return the device to the store for a replacement.

Again, thank you for choosing NETGEAR."

Returned it and bought a Linksys AC1200 model WUSB6300 which is now installed and running fine.

Close case.
There's (afaik) no native linux driver for that hardware. But you can use the 'ndiswrapper' package to use the windows driver in linux. Detailed instructions on how to set ndiswrapper up can be found here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiD ... diswrapper
Hope this will help.
Hope this helps ...

I now have a second wifi adaptor, which I can't get to work eithor (I've made a separate thread about that. It was not even plugged in when I did this, but, it still showed up.

Preferably, I'd like to get online with this (Netgear) one.

Thanks for the replies/links etc....a little above my head I'm afraid.

I had the same problem, but i was able to solve it (not completely).

There is a driver available on git: https://github.com/jurobystricky/Netgear-A6210
You need root for this (sudo) as well as make, cmake and build-essentials!

1. Open up a terminal and change to a directory you like to keep things tidied up.

2. Do a git clone:

Code: Select all

sudo git clone https://github.com/jurobystricky/Netgear-A6210
3. Change into subdirectory Netgear-A6210

Code: Select all

cd Netgear-A6210
4.

Code: Select all

sudo make
5.

Code: Select all

sudo make install
6. Restart your computer???

BEWARE: Unplugging the device will cause Linux to hang (in my case)!!!

DONE

I forgot to mention that you will need the package git

Code: Select all

apt-get install git

Just to add some info here - this driver compiled and installed for me on Mint 18 64-bit, though at this point the adapter is showing as "Unmanaged" so I'm off to Google up how to sort that out...

Created a bootable iso to try Linux Mint on my laptop. I did everything listed above except the restart - got the unmanaged message, and could not activate the adapter. Do I have to do the restart or can I just do a do a network-manager restart? Just wondering because if I reboot, it will wipe away my current settings so I can't test out the adapter. Wanted to make sure I could get the adapter working before installing Linux.
