wifi not seen automatically
Hi,
I loaded mint 17.1 64b via iso downloaded. all seemed to go well except wifi settings were not automatically registered on boot. I used the 32 bit version previously and I don't remember doing anything for wifi connection, it just worked. This install is 64 bit. I did not see any glitches for the install and the desktop seems same as the 32 bit version previously installed.
What is the best path from here? Return to the 32 bit install?
thanks,
keith

Re: wifi not seen automatically
What does that mean? You have to make the configuration after reboot and it then works as expected?klong915 wrote:I loaded mint 17.1 64b via iso downloaded. all seemed to go well except wifi settings were not automatically registered on boot.
Re: wifi not seen automatically
Hi, used pen drive to report system responses below. I'm not sure how to respond to other reply, other than the 32bit Rebecca 17.1 iso download/install automatically configured wifi network.
thanks,

Re: wifi not seen automatically
Open Software Manager -> search firmware-b43-installer -> then Install
Reboot, wireless should work.

Re: wifi not seen automatically
Hi,
I tried this but failed, I'm not connected to internet. Searched on win7-boot for same and downloaded firmware-b43-installer_015-9_all.deb. I rebooted in mint, installed and rebooted but internet access (wifi) not available.
Internet access via wifi was automatically installed and usable when the 32 bit version of mint 17.1 was installed. I must be missing another package.
thanks,
Keith

Try installing these two packages :

Re: wifi not seen automatically
Remove bcmwl-kernel-source package if installed, open a terminal, copy/paste command :
Reboot.
Can you also post back command result so I can check your hardware specs id
Code: Select all
sudo apt purge bcmwl-kernel-source

Re: wifi not seen automatically
Setup looks fine. I sorted it out. Actually firmware-b43-installer needs an internet connection to download and install Broadcom firmware needed by kernel module driver.
So either you can find a way to use an ethernet cable connection, then remove and reinstall package firmware-b43-installer to complete the driver installation process.
Or install it manually, not the easy path and prone to command lines issues.
Howto :
- download broadcom file archive http://www.lwfinger.com/b43-firmware/br ... 38.tar.bz2
- boot LM, copy archive file to a temporary directory
- open a terminal in temporary directory, extract archive and install firmware
You can then safely delete temporary directory. Reboot.

Re: wifi not seen automatically
Hi,
Ok used the second method (wifi is my only path to internet). It did connect to the internet on reboot.
The problem: I open firefox and started DL of chrome. The pc rebooted for no reason. while re-opening LM there was message in top left corner to skip checks, I did not, then message to type F to fix, I did. I again tried chrome DL but system freezes with message in browser that file were being copied.
If needed I will go through lm boot again and more carefully note what occurs.
Thanks,
Keith

Re: wifi not seen automatically
Hi,
I'v e tried several times to boot LM and what occurs is not consistent. Sometimes I'm lead through the Press C to cancel all checks in progress routine to ultimately freeze in firefox browser other times just before it will load LM it will perform a reboot.
I do not remember the ISO location for LM 64 that I have and use. Is there a recommended site to get this SW? I will restart, or should we keep trying to fix what is there?
thanks,
keith

Re: wifi not seen automatically
System freezes are hard to diagnose. You might have a look at the Log viewer utilty for any relevant message. Could be a software or hardware issue. Try using live installer media, surf the web, run some live programs and see if any freeze occurs.

Re: wifi not seen automatically
@klong915
I`ve had a lot of problems with my wifi on my dell.
But I`ve found a solution (in dutch)
Maybe you can translate it with Google?
Download this link: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12172322/ubuntu ... reless.odt
Translate it and work it out. With my Dell it is the first thing I always do after a brandnew install
I hope it works for you.

Re: wifi not seen automatically RESOLVED
Hi,
Ok I think things are in place for the moment. I had forgot about the catch22 with wifi install; the mint install was an upgrade to 17.1 in 32 bit.
Thanks for your patients and help.
I re-installed or installed mint 17.2 and went through the replies here and remember I was once here. This response is from mint 17.2 boot and so far so good. Thanks again,
keith
