internet connection on wifi stops working after some time

Post by Villabacho »

Hi folks,

I recently installed linuxmint 17.2 rafaela on my girlfriend's thinkpad x220.

Everything is working smoothely except that the internet connection stops working from time to time.
the network manager says that I'm connected to wifi but I can't load any pages. I have to reboot to get it running again.

if I can't get this problem solved my girlfriend will force me to switch her laptop back to windows!! :D
Can somebody help me?

i am running on this kernel version: 3.16.0-38

Exact linux version info:

Re: internet connection on wifi stops working after some tim

Post by JeremyB »

I would go into Network Manager and set IPv6 to ignore or disabled. Check your wifi router settings, you want encryption to be WPA2 only, WPA2-PSK, or WPA2-AES...no WEP or TKIP...check

Code: Select all

iwlist scan
then find your wifi in the list and look for group and pairwise ciphers, you want both to be CCMP only.

The only other thing I can think of is

Code: Select all

echo "options iwlwifi 11n_disable=8" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf
Reboot as this usually helps by enabling aggressive TX for wireless N

hi jeremy.
thanks for your quick response.
I disabled ipv6 and set encryption to ccmp only. let's see if that helps.

What about the last part? what does it do? disable 11n i think i disabled that anyway.
I tested differnt kinds of router settings and found that b/g/n is the quickest. when i use g only my speed goes down, same for n only and b only as well as g/n or b/g

The last code can actually increase the transmit speed over wireless-N by up to 60%, on one of my laptops I cannot even connect to a wireless-N only network without that being set

well the first part didn't really solve the problem.

i also tried the last line of code just now. it seems that my internet connection is faster. But that might be a subjective impression.

i#ll wait and see if my problem reoccurs..
