WI-FI Issue (another)

Post by jamchf »

I have used Petra, Quiana, and now Rebecca. Upon my installation of Rebecca I have no wireless recognition. I think I have found the problem, but how do I fix it. My internal wireless card is a Broad-com 1500 Draft 802.11n WLAN Mini. It has been giving me trouble, sometimes it works, sometimes(mostly not). I also use an external LinkSys wireless antenna and it worked fine with Quiana. Now it is not even recognized.

When I go to Driver Manger I get:

Drivers can not be installed.
Please connect to the Internet or insert the Linux Mint installation DVD (or USB stick).

Broad-com Corporation: Wireless 1500 Draft 802.11n WLAN Mini-card
This Device is not working.

bcmwl-kernel-source
Version 6.30.223.248+bdcom-0ubuntu0.1
Broad-com 802.11 Linux STA wireless driver source

I ran >sudo lshw -C network< I got this reply

*-network
description: Network controller
product: BCM4321 802.11a/b/g/n
vendor: Broadcom Corporation
physical id: 0
bus info: pci@0000:0c:00.0

width: 64 bits
clock: 33MHz
capabilities: pm msi pciexpress bus_master cap_list
configuration: driver=b43-pci-bridge latency=0
resources: irq:17 memory:fe8fc000-fe8fffff memory:f0000000-f00fffff
*-network

serial: 00:1d:09:bc:33:5c

resources: irq:17 memory:fe5fe000-fe5fffff

Now when I use my USB Mint 17.1 KDE Live I have wireless. However, when I run:

>sudo lshw -C network<
I have this added at the bottom:
*-network
description: Wireless interface
physical id: 2
bus info: usb@2:3
logical name: wlan0
serial: 68:7f:74:ef:9f:8f
capabilities: ethernet physical wireless
configuration: broadcast=yes driver=rt2800usb driverversion=3.13.0-37-generic firmware=0.29 ip=10.10.20.75 link=no multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11bgn

Furthermore in Driver Manager there is another device in the LIVE MINT:

Linux-firmware-nonfree
Version 1.14ubuntu1
Nonfree firmware for Linux kernels

So I am pretty sure I have found the problems, but how do I fix them??
Can I download the Linux-firmware-nonfree and install it via USB or do I have to hardwire a internet connection? Am I on the right path?
Thank You

Mint 17/17.1 now use firmware-b43-installer for the bcm4321

And if you need to download from another computer you should download firmware-b43-installer and b43-fwcutter. But you could always copy the /lib/firmware/b43/ folder from the KDE live version to your installed LM.

IIRC linux-firmware-nonfree was changed 6 months ago to drop the Broadcom B43 firmware because of licensing issues

My 802.11n dongle also doesn't work in Mint 17.1
Driver for the above is supposed to be incorporated in the kernel; and to my understanding, this means plug-and-play.
Perhaps some kind of kernel patch is required?
Suggestions by the esteemed Forum Members, please?

Wait! It IS in the kernel! Wifi Smoke tried to install a D-link 131 adaptor; and of course it didn't work (in is meant for Windows); but than I rebooted, put the 802.11n adaptor and... yikes! it worked! And it is a very small $5 dongle from the esteemed eBay that came half-smashed but cold be fixed with a screwdriver...
Goes to show you: dedication is needed: lots of wi-fi smoke
