[SOLVED] No wireless connection at work.. but OK at home?!

Post by Jedinovice »

Hi. I am hoping people can help me out here. This is infuriating me. I cannot connect to the password protected workplace wireless connection but I *can* connect to my password protected home network!

I have recently re-installed Mint Linux 17 on my little c50 netbook – 64 bit edition. It was 32 bit before... and I remembered why I always went 32 bit in the past because this kept happening in 64 bits no matter what the machine! But I can't live on 32 bits forever.

It seems to me that the wlan0 is not set with encryption on. But all attempts to set it on are not working using iwconfig. I am sure this is something simple but I can't find it even with online searches and reading the manual.

Note: I am using Mint KDE edition and initially just went with the network manager but no joy. Then to online reading and iwlist and iwconfig,

Feedback from mintWifi.py:

Stand down.

After trying everything including Kbuntu and the kitchen sink… it turns out the MAC address of my little netbook just needed to be added to the domain on the server here at work.

Red face.

Running Mint Linus 17.0 64 bit quite happily now.

Terribly sorry… don't mind me...

Thanks for clarifying this! It might help others as well. :)

One advice though: using a MAC address filter is useless for security:

If I were you, I'd contact the system administrators at your work. They really should change that...
