Wireless on ThinkPad X60 not working

Post by Matthai »

I have ThinkPad X60 with Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca. Kernel is "3.13.0-37-generic #64-Ubuntu SMP Mon Sep 22 21:30:01 UTC 2014 i686 i686 i686 GNU/Linux".

The problem is, wireless is not working.

lspci says I have:
03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection (rev 02)

and:

lsmod | grep -e ndis -e iwl

iwl3945 63619 0
iwlegacy 88016 1 iwl3945
mac80211 546051 2 iwl3945,iwlegacy
cfg80211 409394 3 iwl3945,iwlegacy,mac80211

Any idea?

Hi Matthai,

Can you go into more detail please about what is not working for your wireless connection?
-Does the adapter show up in NetworkManager?
-Are you able to see available wireless networks? How far do you get in the connection process?

Cheers!

No, in Network Manager I cannot enable wireless networking at all.

What connections do you see in the Network Settings window of Network Manager? (also reachable from the "Menu -> Preferences -> Network" menu item)

Wifi looks disabled. The same is with bluetooth. It looks the same as there would wifi be hardware disabled.

I think there are wrong kernel modules loaded or they are loaded with wrong parameters. But I am unable to find out how to solve this. I tried several solutions posted on web forums, but no success.

By chance is the Wifi hardware switch turned off on the side of the laptop? Do you see any changes in the Network connections status when turning the switch on or off?

Huh, that was exactly the problem.

Bastards have hidden the on/off switch very well...

Shame on me. Thanks for help anyway.
