USB wifi device causes discover loop and kernel panic

Post by wgking »

When I plug a Bolse external wifi adapter with RT3072 chipset into my Rebecca desktop, Mint seems to go into a discover loop for a few minutes then causes a kernel panic. The device is supposed to be supported since about kernel 2.6 but I see lots of others with problems with this chipset in both Mint and Ubuntu forums, but no solutions. If I unplug it quickly enough the system stays up so I can get the mintwifi.py data collection: The system also has a wired connection for now. The device works fine with Windows 8.1, so it is not the hardware.

wgking@HAL ~ $ sudo /usr/lib/linuxmint/mintWifi/mintWifi.py

Re: USB wifi device causes discover loop and kernel panic

Post by wgking »

I have an update on this issue. I plugged the device into my Raspberry Pi which runs Debian Wheezy (3.2 kernel) and it works like a charm :D . It looks like the problem was introduced sometime between kernel 3.3 and 3.13. The drivers for the device look the same as the ones that get loaded in kernel 3.13, so it is probably a discovery bug. DMESG/debug output from the Raspberry Pi:

Would be really nice to get this working with my primary Linux distro Mint 17.1 .
