Hey Everyone,

Complete newb/moron here; can somebody bread-crumb me through installing the appropriate driver for this particular wireless chip for the dongle I just bought? I'm running Mint 17.1 and have kernel 3.13.0-24-generic; when I run dmesg, this is what I get:

I've been down more rabbit holes in these forums than Alice and frankly, I think the problem is me; could someone explain, in exceptionally basic terms, what I should do step-by-step? I mean basic- as in how to unzip a folder as root, create a build so that it installs, etc.

First a few questions:

1) Have you installed, at least, the level 1 - 3 updates, via the Update Manager?
2) Have you tried installing the level 4 and 5 updates, too?
3) What about the kernels? Would you be interested in updating the kernel, as well, to see if your wireless chip is supported?
4) Also, have you tried the "Driver Manager?" Does it show your wireless chip and/or any relevant updates?

I would start with these, if you have not already done so. Good luck!

A quick search on the Web for the USB ID 050d:1109 (reported near the bottom of the dmesg) reveals this device: https://wikidevi.com/wiki/Belkin_F9L1109_v1

Is that your wifi dongle?

If yes, you do not have an RTL8192CU. It is a RTL8812AU, which is a new 802.11ac device. Its driver is not yet included with the Linux kernel, which means that it is not preinstalled on Mint yet.

A driver which I would suggest is this one: https://github.com/abperiasamy/rtl8812AU_8821AU_linux
It supports your device 050d:1109. Use the "Download ZIP" button on the sidebar at the right of the page to download it.

After downloading, please extract the ZIP file. Then go to the folder where you extracted it, right-click in the white space inside that folder > Open in Terminal.
In that terminal, please run these commands:

The second command will ask for your password. You will not see anything while typing it.

Please don't randomly copy commands that helped for other people if you don't know for sure that they have the same Wi-Fi chip type. It was the result of what the dmesg output was. It looks like there is an Intel Wireless-N 2200 chip installed and for some reason the wl broadcom driver is being loaded and should be removed as there is no sign of anything broadcom related

It doesn't disable 11n, it actually enables agg tx and a lot of intel wifi cards have issues with wifi speed and disconnects if the 11n_disable=8 isn't used. If someone wants to disable 11n, it would be 11n_disable=1

Maybe, but that doesn't change anything to my point that we don't have the faintest idea at present what is wrong with the internal Intel wifi. At present with Intel problems many people suggest this command but I think it's over-used: in many cases there have been so many suggestions in 1 thread that you don't know if it was actually this 11n thing that fixed it, or something else. I would not be surprised if it turns out to be a workaround for a bug in an older version of Mint. It feels to me like it's being treated as a 'magic' fix for all Intel problems which it certainly isn't.

That doesn't mean that you should never suggest it, but at least I don't think you should suggest it automatically without knowing what problem the user is having.

Anyway, I think we're now making the topic quite unreadable. I would first await the reply by @jonathanrbecker, he has been given many suggestions in the past few posts. And I'm sorry if I misread the original post; I was too focused on the USB dongle to notice the other drivers in his output.

Jonathan's first post makes clear that he already tried quite a lot of things to get the dongle working. He probably tried to load the rtl8192cu driver himself with modprobe.

Jonathan, thank you for reporting that this driver is working. If you edit the topic title to include the correct chip ID RTL8812AU, then people looking for this chip on Google will find this thread too if they have problems with their RTL8812AU. Meanwhile you can also add [SOLVED] to the title, that is considered good practice on this forum for problems that have been solved.
