hello i have been having slow wifi signals on my Acer Aspire 5536 laptop running 17.1 with mate desktop,i bought a D-Link usb wireless adapter DWA-125 and when i was running windows 7 ultimate i could use device manager to disable the Atheros wifi card,so does anyone know how to disable it on Mint so i can use the D-Link instead please?
i am currently getting only 63% with Atheros and i am hoping to get a bit more using the usb.

Post and you might be able to disable the internal card in BIOS or remove it

You could of course simply blacklist the ath9k driver, which would disable it in the same way as you did in Windows.
However, it's not necessary. When you have more than one wireless chipset connected to your computer, you can simply select which one you want to use for the connection.

thank you Pjotr i was getting 66% wifi signal with Atheros and when i put in the D-Link i am getting 69% not great but maybe good enough.

i got my son in law to fix an ethernet cable from my sky router to my laptop and all seems ok now, except where i used to hover over the wifi icon and see the % of the signal wired does not do that,is there any way of seeing what sort of signal % i am getting?
