Post by Tom P »

I bought this $10 stick to keep an old laptop working whose internal Qualcom Wlan died.

Note that wlan0, card-1 is the dead internal wlan, and card-3 is the Realtek stick.

I now have two problems. The first is that I cannot get the driver SW that was delivered along with the stick to install. I unzipped the Linux SW from the disk onto the PC, and ran this:

Code: Select all

sudo bash install.sh

As you can see, it fails to compile. Why? What is this missing section 'Wlan'?

I then tried ndiswrapper, I unzipped the winXP drivers and ran this:

Code: Select all

cd '/home/tom/Desktop/WinXP'
ls
net8192su.cat net8192su.inf rtl8192su.sys

sudo ndiswrapper -i net8192su.inf
gksu gedit /etc/modules
.. to add ndiswrapper to the module list.

Code: Select all

cat /etc/modules

# This file contains the names of kernel modules that should be loaded

However, although ndiswrapper says it's installed, it doesn't show up. Heres mintwifi output:

Thanks for the suggestion. However it still doesn't work. (Version has changed from 8192cu/1.8 to 8192cu/1.9 btw)
Are you sure 8192cu is correct?

Here's what lsusb and mintwifi look like now -

After searching google and ubuntuforums, I would suggest buying a new internal card. It seems that everyone that has one of those has issues.

Your device should work right away, it's better if we first try to find out why it doesn't. Trying to install many other drivers does not always improve the situation as they may be tricky to remove. I'd like to do some more research into your problem first.

Please post the output of:

Code: Select all

rfkill list
inxi -Nx
lsusb
sudo modprobe r8712u
dmesg|grep 8712
Tom P wrote:update - I found this - http://cateee.net/lkddb/web-lkddb/RTL8192SU.html

That is an ancient driver superseded by http://cateee.net/lkddb/web-lkddb/R8712U.html which is preinstalled. The ndiswrapper part of the mintwifi script also told you the r8712u native driver was available for your device, to use instead of the Windows one.

[quote="AlbertP"]Your device should work right away, it's better if we first try to find out why it doesn't. Trying to install many other drivers does not always improve the situation as they may be tricky to remove. I'd like to do some more research into your problem first.

Please post the output of:

I see no errors in the output, the r8712u driver detects your device after you loaded it with the modprobe command. Are you able to see networks (when clicking network icon in the tray) after sudo modprobe r8712u?

by the way, you don't need to quote if you reply to the last post in a thread. It's not in our forum rules actually but common practice on other forums, not to quote the last poster.

Hey, it seems to be working -

Code: Select all

iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

wlan1 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:"xxxxxxxxx" Nickname:"rtl_wifi"
          Mode:Managed Frequency:2.452 GHz Access Point: 00:23:69:A2:0C:33
          Bit Rate:54 Mb/s Sensitivity:0/0
          Retry:off RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality=100/100 Signal level=100/100 Noise level=0/100
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:off/any
          Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=20 dBm
          Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:off

eth0 no wireless extensions.
What made it work, was it the modprobe command? Sorry if I sound stupid but I have no idea what these commands are doing.

[edited]
This is not the final fix. I just tried rebooting and it's clunky. The wifi does not come up.
If I do modprobe again I get this in dmesg:

Code: Select all

[ 208.720063] usb 1-3: new high-speed USB device number 2 using ehci_hcd
[ 294.054473] r8712u: module is from the staging directory, the quality is unknown, you have been warned.

[ 294.534259] ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan1: link is not ready
iwconfig says this-

Code: Select all

iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

wlan1 unassociated Nickname:"rtl_wifi"
          Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Sensitivity:0/0
          Retry:off RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:off/any

          Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:off

eth0 no wireless extensions.
something else, when I click on the network icon down in the tray, I see both the wifi I/Fs grayed out and "wireless is disabled by hardware switch"

To avoid needing modprobe every time, please run:

Code: Select all

sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/ndiswrapper.conf
And, to find out why wifi is disabled by hardware switch, please run this command and post the output here:

Code: Select all

rfkill list

I removed keeping a backup like this:

Code: Select all

sudo mv /etc/modprobe.d/ndiswrapper.conf /home/tom/Desktop

.. and rebooted. I now have

Code: Select all

rfkill list
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
	Soft blocked: no
	Hard blocked: yes
and

Code: Select all

iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:off/any
          Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=off
          Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:off

eth0 no wireless extensions.
This is with the REaltek stick plugged in.
Back to square one.

You finally have a working driver, but the wireless is blocked by the Wifi ON/OFF switch of the computer (Fn-F1?). If you can get that fixed, likely your internal wifi will work too, it is probably the same wireless switch which blocks your internal wifi too.

It may be solved by running this in terminal:

Code: Select all

sudo rfkill unblock all

something really strange is going on, it now says

Code: Select all

iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.

wlan1 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:"Campogrande7" Nickname:"rtl_wifi"
          Mode:Managed Frequency:2.452 GHz Access Point: 00:23:69:A2:0C:33
          Bit Rate:54 Mb/s Sensitivity:0/0
          Retry:off RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality=100/100 Signal level=100/100 Noise level=0/100
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:off/any
          Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=20 dBm
          Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:off

eth0 no wireless extensions.

tom@tom-ESPRIMO-Mobile-V5535 ~ $ rfkill list
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
	Soft blocked: no
	Hard blocked: no
I have no idea what happened to change it other than re-boot.
A question, how can I tell which software/firmware is now running?
FWIW I also had that problem with the windows manager that is fixed by xfwm4

Thanks JeremyB for tip -

Code: Select all

  *-network
       description: Wireless interface
       physical id: 3
       bus info: usb@1:3
       logical name: wlan1
       serial: 00:0b:81:98:69:f9
       capabilities: ethernet physical wireless
       configuration: broadcast=yes driver=r8712u ip=192.168.1.111 multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11bg
I'm still not clear what is driver=r8712u? Is that the standard driver?

Hey,

I know this thread is way old, but I thought I'd post a solution that works for me, just in case it helps anyone with the RTL8191SU or similar wifi card or dongle, that uses the r8712u driver. My wifi was dropping out and I solved it by editing /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf and adding the following line:

Code: Select all

[device]
wifi.scan-rand-mac-address=no
I hope this helps.
