Intel Centrino card cannot connect to some networks

Post by darian »

Hey guys,

I am a new Linux Mint user and have some problems with some specific networks. It means the NetworkManage is trying to connect for a long time and never wants my user and password.
There is a list with some working networks and some networks they dont. Maybe it belongs to the Authentication 802.1x. (both networks with problems using 802.1x)

And it worked the last year on a older ubuntu system and it works on windows too. So it has to be a newer issue with this version.

Here some Informations:

Re: Intel Centrino card cannot connect to some networks

Post by JeremyB »

Some Intel cards have issues with 11N networks. My Intel 6250 would not connect to 11N only networks until I used

Code: Select all

echo "options iwlwifi 11n_disable=8" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf
You may want to look at the file to see if it doesn't already have a line that says "options iwlwifi 11n_disable="

Code: Select all

cat /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf

Thank you JeremyB for your answer.

Unfortunately it didn't help. Maybe I did something wrong.

This is my /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf:

Code: Select all

remove iwlwifi \
(/sbin/lsmod | grep -o -e ^iwlmvm -e ^iwldvm -e ^iwlwifi | xargs /sbin/rmmod) \
&& /sbin/modprobe -r mac80211
options iwlwifi 11n_disable=8
And this is my last dmesg output (and yes, it takes 361 sec to boot my system, but this is a bug I have to find later):

Code: Select all

Are you actually in Canada? I will have to look into the DTR disabled in the dmesg log, other than that the only strange thing was the waiting for beacon message

I would like you to use the Update Manager, click on View and then Linux Kernels, you should be able to click on 3.13.0-45 and then click install, reboot when it is finished and see if problem is fixed.

Hey,

thanks JeremyB for your help again.

This is the kernel I am currently using. Should I try the newest one?

Thats cool on Linux Mint that you can switch between kernels so easy...:-)

Actually, reboot and hold the shift key and wait for grub menu. From there select advanced options or previous versions and see if there is an older version that can be selected that might work. If the update manager doesn't show any older kernels installed, try 3.13.0-37 to install and use shift during boot to select as the newest kernel(highest version number) will usually be default

Lets try this

Code: Select all

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf
then change it from 11n_disable=8 to 11n_disable=1 and add a line

Code: Select all

options iwlwifi swcrytpo=1
and reboot
If it doesn't help run the same sudo gedit and add

Code: Select all

options iwlwifi bt_coex_active=N
Reboot again and if that doesn't fix it it must be something that Linux doesn't like with those wifi access points. I have heard that WICD might help but running WICD and network manager at the same time doesn't work well and I haven't run WICD

Unfortunately the new options doesn't change anything. Thats wired, maybe I am making a mistake?!?

This is my current iwlwifi.conf

Code: Select all

remove iwlwifi \
(/sbin/lsmod | grep -o -e ^iwlmvm -e ^iwldvm -e ^iwlwifi | xargs /sbin/rmmod) \
&& /sbin/modprobe -r mac80211
options iwlwifi 11n_disable=1
options iwlwifi swcrytpo=1
options iwlwifi bt_coex_active=N
Do you think waiting for the next Linux Mint version can help?

Thanks and bye

This whole thing is a bit weird as Linux usually has issues with TKIP encryption, yet one access point you say works well uses a mixed mode with TKIP. It is possible that a newer kernel or a change of firmware could fix the issue. We could try an older firmware by renaming the latest and rebooting

Code: Select all

sudo mv /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-6000g2a.ucode /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-6000g2a.bak
Print this out in case it doesn't allow you to connect at all, this will reverse the change in case it make things worse

Code: Select all

sudo mv /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-6000g2a.bak /lib/firmware/iwlwifi-6000g2a.ucode

Unfortunately not.

I gonna try the live version from a usb stick, I guess it worked before (but I am not sure)
If this doesn't work, I try a ubuntu live version. Comparing the system and the logs may give new informations.

Or do you still have ideas?

No more ideas but I would be surprised if Ubuntu worked any better

Hello again,

I solved the problem with a workaround. Maybe this solution can help other people too.

First I tried the Linux Mint from USB, which had the same problem with the WIFI. Keep in mind that I never was able to use the Wifi password. So actually the GUI for the Network never was shown. I dont know why and whats going on in the background.

Then I started the Ubuntu 14.10 and the Window for the Wifi properties was shown and I added it worked. So the NetworkManager generated the connection file in /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/NetworkName

I copied the file to my Linux Mint /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections directory and it worked.

We were thinking about a kernel, module problem. But it actually was a NetworkManager problem?!?

Does anyone know what exactly going on here? Should I post a Bug report?

Thx for your help!

I don't imagine you made a backup of the original LM file from system-connections or happen to compare the contents to see what was different? The differences would be very helpful in a bug report and I know those files can contain MAC addresses and do contain network passwords so I wouldn't expect you to post that info

Hey,

if there would be a file before, I would have a backup. But there just wasn't a file for this connection already. The NetworkManager never generated the file. He didnt even ask for the password and the user name.

So the system-connections/ file would'nt help for a bug report.

Do you think I should write a bug report, if yes, where?
