Unstable wifi on Mint 17.1

Post by jemdem »

Hi all,

my wifi cards detects the network, connects to it, allow me to browse internet, but very slowly and only for a few seconds. Then it tries to reconnect, sometimes succeeds, sometimes not.

I have already disabled Wifi n, change my passwords to TKIP without special caracters and turned off power management.

I don't know what else to do... (I have this problem on tree PCs, two of them have the same card).

Can you run this command and paste the contents of the wireless-info.txt file it creates

Code: Select all

wget -N -t 5 -T 10 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/57264241/wireless_script && chmod +x wireless_script && ./wireless_script
You might have better performance without TKIP, WPA2-AES seems to work the best in Linux

Hello, jemdem.

On Mint 17.1 you do no longer need the command pastebinit, because as you may find in the System Improvement section of Mint 17.1 it comes with a new command pastebin out of the box:
System improvements
Linux Mint 17.1 features the following system changes:
  • A new pastebin command was introduced. You can pipe a command into it or simply give it a filename. The text is then available online for 2 days:
    • echo "Hello World!" | pastebin
    • pastebin myfile.txt
Provided you are in the folder where the file wireless-info.txt has been stored, the command

Code: Select all

pastebin wireless-info.txt
should do the job and upload the file to Pastebin and return the needed URL.
--
You may wish to uninstall the obsolete pastebinit by executing this command

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get remove pastebinit
Cheers,
Karl

Hello, jemdem.

About where the file wireless-info.txt might be:

Let us go back to a previous commandline which you were given and asked to execute.
You executed

Code: Select all

wget -N -t 5 -T 10 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/57264241/wireless_script && chmod +x wireless_script && ./wireless_script
In fact these are 3 commands on a single line:
1. get the script wireless_script
2. make wireless_script executable
3. execute the script wireless_script

The script wireless_script will write the file wireless-info.txt.

You posted the whole screen output generated by the 3 commands yourself.

Near the end of this screen output there is the line

Code: Select all

Results saved in "/home/jay/wireless-info.txt"
So the file wireless-info.txt should be found in your home folder.

Therefore this command should work:

Code: Select all

pastebin /home/jay/wireless-info.txt
Kind regards,
Karl

It seems that TKIP may be causing some of your issues, go back to AES encryption

And one other thing that might be causing problem

Code: Select all

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf
It should be

Code: Select all

# /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf
# iwlwifi will dyamically load either iwldvm or iwlmvm depending on the
# microcode file installed on the system. When removing iwlwifi, first
# remove the iwl?vm module and then iwlwifi.
remove iwlwifi \
(/sbin/lsmod | grep -o -e ^iwlmvm -e ^iwldvm -e ^iwlwifi | xargs /sbin/rmmod) \
&& /sbin/modprobe -r mac80211
options iwlwifi 11n_disable=8
Save, exit program reboot
11n_disable=8 enables agg tx which seems to help the 7260 and other intel wifi cards

Another thing that could help is to set your country code, if you are in Belgium then

Code: Select all

sudo iw reg set BE

I did everything as you suggested but it's still completely unstable. Any other idea?

Lets see if the backports will stabilize the connection

Code: Select all

wget -N -t 5 -T 10 https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/projects/backports/stable/v3.18.1/backports-3.18.1-1.tar.xz

Code: Select all

tar -xf backports-3.18.1-1.tar.xz

Code: Select all

cd ~/backports-3.18.1-1

Code: Select all

make defconfig-iwlwifi

Code: Select all

make

Code: Select all

sudo make install
Reboot

Ok, that's already better. Now when I'm just beside the wifi router I get a stable connection. But one room away (where then other different computers with different wifi cards use wifi all day without a problem) it still doesn't work (wifi signal around 50-60%).

Is this wifi card known to be really poorer than average?

It doesn't seem any worse than other wifi cards I have. It might be part of the driver that deals with rx signal attenuation which could be fixed but if it is an issue with the firmware we will be waiting on Intel to release new firmware
