[SOLVED] Asus PCE-N15 not working in 17.1
I have spent the last 3 days trying to get my new wifi card to work - I've shouted at it, sworn at it, threatened to throw it in the bin, but to no avail. It's an Asus PCE-N15 which I believe is a Realtek chipset, and I'm running Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca. Googling around and searching the forums there seem to be plenty of others having problems with this card/chipset. As a Linux n00b I've tried to implement many of the suggestions that I've read (e.g. using ndiswrapper to install the XP drivers, trying and failing to compile the Linux drivers from the cd and the Asus website) but I fear I've simply made the problem worse and turned the config into a shambles.
I'm at work at the moment (ssh don't tell them I'm on the interwebs!) but as soon as I can I'll try some diagnostic commands and post the outputs - any suggestions what to run to get the relevant info? I recall something like lspci to list pci devices, and people banging on about modprobe.
Other info that may be relevant - my router is old so it's 802.11g there's no n speed. I have a USB dongle that works (my old and trusty Sweex LW053) but I have to use a USB extension trailed across the floor and down the stairs to get reception hence wanting a pci card. Oh and I've tried changing the router channel from Auto to 11 but it made no difference.
Thanks in advance

Re: Asus PCE-N15 not working in 17.1
OK I'm back from work, here's some info:
lspci
mintWifi
I'm guessing that wlan0 is the Sweex USB dongle that I'm currently using to connect to the internet.
If there's any other info that would be useful just let me know.
Over to the experts, ie you lot out there - help! Please bear in mind I have no real clue what I'm doing.

Re: Asus PCE-N15 not working in 17.1
You, sir, are a GENIUS! Many thanks, I would never have worked that out myself. The wifi card is now working, the only problem is that it doesn't survive a reboot. Reading around I think I need to blacklist the built-in driver and somehow get the new driver active at startup.
Can you help with the final piece of the puzzle?

Hmm that hasn't worked, after a reboot the card isn't picked up. I can see that the file /etc/modprobe.d/rtl8192ce.conf now contains the text "options rtl8192ce swenc=Y ips=N". Is there another step I need to take?

Sorry, that last post was the output of the command after I've booted up and got the card working. Is that correct or did you want the output from when I boot up but before I get the card working?

Fantastic, that's done the trick! Thanks for your help JeremyB, kudos to you. I'll mark this as solved.
Re: [SOLVED] Asus PCE-N15 not working in 17.1
Thank you guys, also I'vee solved my problem with this topic. I have a Notebook Lenovo G40-70 and have installed Linux Mint 17.1 on it. My wireless connection also was not working right. Every time I turned on my notebook I had wireless connection for a few minutes, but then could no longer surf the Internet, though still connected to the wireless network.
So, I worked with the codes you put here:
For the last code I've got the following error:
~/rtlwifi_new $ sudo modprobe -v rtl8192ce swenc=Y ips=N
insmod /lib/modules/3.13.0-37-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rtlwifi/rtl8192c/rtl8192c-common.ko
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'rtl8192ce': Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)
Then, as I saw in another forum, I switched rtl8192ce by rtl8192se and I got:
insmod /lib/modules/3.13.0-37-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rtlwifi/rtl8192se/rtl8192se.ko swenc=Y ips=N
If you know what happened here, please, tell me.
Thanks!
