Upgraded to 17.1 from 14, wifi now slow and intermittent

Post by dig59017 »

I decided yesterday it was time to upgrade the OS on my trusty Dell Latitude E4130. Everything was working fine with it, but I was having trouble getting updates due to EOL on version 14 and this was a good time to take it down and update. Upgrade process went fine, it was a wipe and fresh install. However, I immediately noticed that my wifi was just barely working once I got through the upgrade. I figured something might have gone wrong on the install so I did it again, same result. I started cruising the forum and found that this seems to be happening fairly frequently, but I've not been able to make heads or tails of the process to follow. What I've seen in recent threads seems to be directed at specific adapters and router configurations rather than a general solution, and I've seen nothing on my specific setup.

Here is what I'm experiencing: My network connection will work fine for a while after a reboot, and then suddenly all of my queries will timeout. Sometimes I'll get a little bit of data through but it's just a trickle if anything. If I turn wifi off and back on again it will work, sometimes for a minute sometimes longer, but it eventually drops out again.

I've tried a few things that I've picked up on the forum but haven't been able to get anything to work yet. My wired connection seems to be OK. Can anyone provide some guidance for how to troubleshoot this? I've not had a lot of experience with unix/linux configuration so I'm bumbling about a bit. Thanks!

Upgraded to 17.1 from 14, wifi now slow and intermittent

Post by dig59017 »

I have a Dell Latitude with a Centrino Ultimate 6300 wireless adapter. The system works fine under windows, and worked fine under Mint 14. I upgraded to 17.1 yesterday, a full wipe and install, and immediately I had trouble with the wifi. It connects for a while, then gets really slow and even disconnects. Disabling and re-enabling the adapter (or rebooting the computer) fixes the problem temporarily but it always returns. It might be a minute or an hour, but it always craps out again. It sounds similar to problems others on the forum are reporting. I've tried a few of the suggestions, but the ones that seem to work for others are setting changes suggested by JeremyB that are specific to different wifi controllers than the one I have. I'd like to try that but don't know where to go from here.

Here's the conf file contents. Other logs and such are attached. If anyone could help me figure out what to try to get this working I would be very grateful. Thanks!

Scott

This might help

Code: Select all

echo "options iwlwifi 11n_disable=8" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf
Reboot and if it slows down again enter

Code: Select all

dmesg | tail -20
and post the output

Hello, digg59017.

Independently of JeremyB's post, I wonder whether the latest available linux-firmware update to version 1.127.11 might solve your issue. After all linux-firmware 1.127.11 brought a patch for iwlwifi.
You can find out which version of linux-firmware has been installed in Synaptic e.g. or by running this terminal command

Code: Select all

dpkg --list linux-firmware
Cheers,
Karl

Thanks JeremyB!

I immediately had connection issues after reboot. Problem seems worse now. I can get a connection briefly (it seems) by turning off and on the wifi adapter.

dmsg command yields

Hi Karl, Thanks for your help!

I am on 127.7. I will see if I can figure out how to upgrade the firmware.

I'm in the US.

I'm still seeing some glitchy behavior. Web sites were timing out starting right when I hit "Submit" on my last post, and I just restarted the adapter.

So the wifi on this new installation is still ACHINGLY slow. Restarting the adapter seems to help, and it does seem like if I restart it a few times it will get into a state where it runs pretty well for a while, but is still fading away into no bandwidth land. It still seems to run at a trickle, but it's worse than dialup. Attached is a screen cap that shows the System Monitor while viewing a youtube video. I had just reset the adapter and youtube ran for a bit then crapped out. You can see the throughput going to 0. This is not happening on this system when running in Windows (It's set up to dual boot) and my other computers are not experiencing bandwidth issues when I'm getting nothing on this one.

My firmware is now at 1.127.1.
I made the adapter setting changes that JeremyB suggested.

Are there any other things I can try? It really isn't useable the way things sit...

In terminal

Code: Select all

iw reg get
If if doesn't say US somewhere in the output then

Code: Select all

sudo iw reg set US
If that doesn't fix, disable IPv6 in network manager and follow the instructions to run and post the wireless script

I assume the version string is 1.127.7. The updates can be got throught the Update Manager. But beware: the pdate-Manager will only display the most recent available linux-firmware in case you allow it to display (property "visible") updates of safety levels [4] and [5]. [4] and [5], because I am not sure whether linux-firmware is in category [4] or [5]. I guess it is [5]. - Just checked it, it is in category [5].

Jeremy,

Country was listed as "00", now listed as "US". I will try again to see how it's working now, if that made a difference.

Karl,

My firmware now shows up as 1.127.11. Sorry I wasn't clear that I had gotten that done successfully. However it doesn't seem to have fixed the issue.

Code: Select all

 ~ $ dpkg --list linux-firmware
Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold
| Status=Not/Inst/Conf-files/Unpacked/halF-conf/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend
|/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad)
||/ Name           Version      Architecture Description
+++-==============-============-============-=================================
ii linux-firmware 1.127.11 all Firmware for Linux kernel drivers

Forgot to post the link to the wireless script from my phone http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=370108

And it might help to edit the CRDA file

Code: Select all

gksudo gedit /etc/default/crda
and make the last line say REGDOMAIN=US instead of the default 00, save, exit gedit, and reboot

Jeremy,

I followed the instructions in your link to generate the file (attached).

While running the dist-update command prior to generating the script I saw a few instances of the following warning:

Warning: No support for locale: en_US.utf8

Not sure if that's pertinent, but given that it related to what you had me do earlier I thought it would be good to mention...

Thanks

as I am not sure if it will load this kernel or the one you already have. The patch applied to this one is not yet in the Ubuntu kernels that are available using Mint Update Manager

Jeremy,

I did the second thing that you suggested in your last post: edited the CDRA file. That seems to have made a major improvement. I just saw your new suggestions. I'm going to wait a bit before trying them just to see if this really is working or if it's just a particularly long time between glitches.

Thanks!

It went a particularly long time this time, about 20 minutes, but it did crap out again and I had to reset the adapter. I'm going to execute the instructions you just sent.

The fourth file that you posted threw an error when I tried to install. Screen cap of the error is attached.

I rebooted and now uname-a yields

Problem still persists. It seems like maybe it goes longer before jamming up than before. Also, it seems like use of high bandwidth like youtube can send it off, but that just might be selection bias. I'm at a complete loss as to what to do about this to make it workable. Any additional advice would be greatly appreciated!

You should have other kernels installed. When booting press SHIFT key and hopefully you will get the grub menu, select previous Linux versions and select a different kernel, you might have 3.13.0-24 available and see if that works better.

And then there is an option to get a newer kernel using Mint Update Manager, run the Update Manager then click view and then linux kernels and 3.13.0-43 should be available
