Wireless is slow and sometimes not working

Post by DC80 »

Hi all,

Since a few weeks I'm experiencing some problems with my laptop connecting to the internet. Also my local network is slow(from my wifi). I hope someone will help me with this. Although I'm not new to linux but still a user. Problem solving and debugging was never my strongest thing...

This is what I did until now:

- Google my problem, it seems a bug or a problem with the latest update (according to some)
- Tried to research the problem my self.
- Run some scripts from here (on the forum):

Pastebin

After a reboot all is good and well but after some time and working it will happen again.

This is the output from syslog:

Re: Wireless is slow and sometimes not working

Post by JeremyB »

Try

Code: Select all

echo "options iwlwifi wd_disable=1" | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/iwlwifi.conf
Reboot and test

Testing the patched kernel from one bug report might work http://people.canonical.com/~sforshee/i ... _amd64.deb

Hi JeremyB,

Thanks for replying! I did not expect a reply so soon :-).

I did what you suggested and this is what I could find. I probably need to run the computer for a while to see if this is solved. I found this in syslog:

What you found in syslog is normal for an intel card at startup

Do you need Bluetooth? It is known that Wifi and Bluetooth "don't like eachother". In other words, if you don't need bluetooth, deinstall it.

@jeremyB: The problem seems to be solved. I did check the syslog again today and no trace of iwlwifi messages, also I can listen to a internet radio stream and work with libreoffice (which saves the files on the local network) again. Thank you for helping me and have a nice year!

@nomko: That may well be the cause of this problem. Reading your reply reminds me of testing a bleutooth headset I bought a few weeks ago. Normally I do not use bluetooth in any way so I leave it alone. The new headset is for my desktop and my dekstop is wired, not wireless :-)

The solution is the answer of JeremyB in my case. Also Nomko has a valid point. So if you want to test a bluetooth headset, remember this topic.

Thanks guys! Have a happy new year :-)

Could it be bleutooth? If so, which packages do I remove?

I will try the patch first :-).

Re: Wireless is slow and sometimes not working

Post by DC80 »

The patch did not work. Probably due to the wrong kernel number. I use 3.13.0-24 and I installed 3.13.0-38. Should I update the kernels? Mint does not mention them.

After the reboot my nic didn't function at all and I got Mint's safemode...

Please some help :-)

Remove Bluetooth first. See what happens then.

Hi Nomko,

I have bluetooth removed using apt-get. I do not see anything yet but as I use the laptop it becomes more slowly. So I will run for a few hours maybe tomorrow I know more.

Thanks for helping me :-)

Hi! :)

Removing bluetooth does not seem te work. I got the same problem today. I was just listening to some music and suddenly it was gone. I got the same output in the syslog. But this seems the problem:

Code: Select all

Jan 3 12:00:40 stargate-universe kernel: [ 8861.592032] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: fail to flush all tx fifo queues Q 2
After this the syslog gets kind of flooded with the iwlwifi messages.
