Wireless connection failing in Mint 17 cinnamon

Post by mmichaelc »

Hi,

I have an issue with my wireless connection failing after a random amount of time.
It connects to the router fine without problems but after a few minutes - 20 minutes, everything network related stops working (ping, name resolution).
I've trawled through lots of searches and forums but found no solution.

I've tried 2 different wireless cards:
- Asus PCE-N53 PCI-E card (https://wikidevi.com/wiki/ASUS_PCE-N53) which has the RT5592 chipset.
- Edimax EW-7811UN USB adapter (https://wikidevi.com/wiki/Edimax_EW-7811Un) which has the RTL8188CUS chipset.

I found out that the chipset in the asus card was not very good on linux so I bought the usb one thinking that was the problem, but it's still the same.

Here is the output from mintwifi:

The one thing I've observed is the ip routing table seems to change.
Normally it's like this:

Code: Select all

route
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
default SkyRouter.Home 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 wlan0
192.168.0.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 9 0 0 wlan0

ip route
default via 192.168.0.1 dev wlan0 proto static
192.168.0.0/24 dev wlan0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.0.3 metric 9
But when it stops working:

Code: Select all

route
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
default 192.168.0.1 0.0.0.0 UG 0 0 0 wlan0
192.168.0.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 9 0 0 wlan0

ip route
default via 192.168.0.1 dev wlan0 proto static
192.168.0.0/24 dev wlan0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.0.3 metric 9
At which point even pinging the router fails:

ping 192.168.0.1
PING 192.168.0.1 (192.168.0.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
^C
--- 192.168.0.1 ping statistics ---
14 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 13104ms

Occasionally ping shows 192.168.0.3 (my computer) as host unreachable (???)

Turning wifi off then back on again in network manager temporarily fixes it.

Many thanks for any help!

Also, don't think it's the router as my phone (android) and xbox never have problems.

I dont notice anything really odd that jumps out at me (I'm not a network admin, just a hobbyist). Have you tried installing any drivers? My internal card which is a

Code: Select all

Network: Card-1: Ralink RT3290 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R PCIe driver: rt2800pci
Would do exactly the same thing. By "exactly the same thing" I mean it worked intermittently. What I ended up doing was going for a different, external adapter. Seems like you already tried this approach though. Make suer only one adapter is plugged in at a time. Or, in the case of internal adapters, make sure the one your not using is disabled/not connected.

Beyond drivers, not sure at this time what the issue is. Go ahead and try installing drivers, and hopefully a network guru will be able to assist further. :)

Thanks, I'll look for some other drivers.
I got this adapter because the driver was included in the kernel though...

Might need a better diagnostic view of things, so I will have you install pastebin and run a diagnostic script

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install pastebinit

Code: Select all

wget -N -t 5 -T 10 http://dl.dropbox.com/u/57264241/wireless_script && chmod +x wireless_script && ./wireless_script

Code: Select all

pastebinit wireless-info.txt
Just copy and paste the resulting URL from the last terminal command

I would change the settings in Network Manager for your connection for IPv6 to ignore and use Mint Update Manager to update your kernel. In Update Manager click View, then Linux Kernels and install 3.13.0-39, reboot and see if it is better

Turned off ip6, updated kernel, rebooted.
Worked for about 10 minutes then went again. :(

I ran that script again while it wasn't working, had to pastebinit manually after turning wireless off and on.

It almost looks to be power management or firewall related. With the RTL PCIe card drivers there are parameters that can be set that help but no such parameters for the USB cards. I will have to search to see if there is anything new in the latest kernel that might help

Hi, Sorry for not keeping the thread updated guys.
I updated to kernel 3.13.0-39 but still had no luck.

I ended up buying a powerline adapter and just using ethernet which works flawlessly.
Obviously it would be useful to know what is causing the issue as it could be something that hasn't been tested before.

Hi guys, it's not really a fix, but a weird workaround....I have the same issue on my MSI Wind U100 netbook which has a Realtek 8187SE WiFi chipset. Ethernet works flawlessly, but my WiFi does the same as yours does....fails after a random amount of time, and a restart seems to be the only thing that fixed it.

HOWEVER, I noticed the other day, when it "failed" - I put the laptop to sleep and immediately woke it up and WiFi was back. I've now done this every time the WiFi "fails" and it always comes back after I put the laptop to sleep and wake it up...much quicker than having to do a full restart as well.....maybe give it a shot and let us know if it works for you..?

Like I said, I know it's not a fix, but at least it's something!
