If it doesn't work try

or use the keyboard combo to toggle the wifi as it did show as soft blocked in the report

lspci -nnk | grep -iA2 net

gave me a Broadcom 4321, then the first three steps made it work, purge step being important after a fresh install of mint 17 xfce on an old Dell M1210. I've used every edition since seven or eight, and the wifi has worked on most of them. I was somewhat surprised Mint 17 didn't.

Worked a charm! Cannot thank you enough!

With the above magic, I managed to get not one, but TWO D620's up and running online today, for a family that is staring dire medical issues directly in the face. These nice folks are in enough trouble already, and have no resources for purchasing new machines, and it was an absolute treat to be able to breathe life back into the pair of ancient laptops they presented me with. And then, after it all worked so well, the wife gave me a meek smile and then produced a Dell Inspiron Mini 9 910 from some dark recess somewhere, and barely whispered her hope that perhaps? Maybe?

And sure enough, the precise exact same lines entered into a terminal, unaltered in any way, worked a miracle and the Mini joined its D620 siblings on line! These people sorely needed to be able to communicate via the internet, and now they can.

I am posting these words in the hope that some poor soul out there Googling in the wilderness might find them, regarding the Dell Inspiron Mini 9 910, and be able to bring their little machine back to life.

I am in your debt JeremyB.

And I am in the debt of the wider Linux Mint community.
