How do I share WWAN connection via WIFI or USB to Smartphone

Post by mideal »

I've got a Thinkpad T500 wiht UMTS/broadband using a 5GB flat rate, which I'd like to share with my smartphone (S5 with "only" 500MB "flat", often used up).

It doesn't matter if I can used a wireless connection or a USB connection (but as I'm travelling no external router solution is acceptable).
I only found (non suitable) descriptions for (older) Ubuntu versions, mostly posted before 2011 or incomplete description where several important steps are left out.

Could anybody tell me how this connection is possible?

That's what mintWifi tells me:

There is a 'use as hotspot' option in the wireless area of network manager but I haven't tried it

Depends on whether you are using Cinnamon, Mate.....
In cinnamon click on the networking icon in the notification bar and select network settings and 'use as hotspot' is on the bottom of the window that appears.
In Mate click on the networking icon and click new connection and the window that appears has a dropdown box that says 'new' but you can select 'hotspot'
I have looked in Xfce for the option and I don't have KDE installed

Thanks for your hints. I use Cinnamon - read the see signature ;-) (hey, I updated this especially for my post and nobody honors my hard work :( )

Well, it's possible to switch it on there.
Hotspot network with name "xyz" is said to be established with WEP protection and security key "zxy".
Just to make this complete for other readers:
Of course the connection to my WIFI is lost and I have to connect to the internet via UMTS.

However, no other WIFI capable notebook or smartphone is possible to see this hotspot.

Try changing encryption to WPA2 Personal and there should be something in network manager under the hotspot that says 'ad-hoc', see if you are able to change this to infrastructure

If that doesn't work

http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/201 ... p-android/

Might work but it looks like you download the program install it and it says the version doesn't work well with Ubuntu 14.04(LM17 is built on 14.04) but that may have changed since the page was last updated and according to one of the comments it was fixed in September

Thanks for your effort and will to help.

It's a pity, but following through the detailled descriptionn of ubuntuhandbooks.org
I found out my modem doesn't support AP mode.

Edit: WIFI works again.
