Broadcom BCM4318 on LM 17 Qiana Cinnamon 64Bit

Post by Kiwi_Tim »

Hi,

I'm testing LM 17 Qiana Cinnamon 64Bit on my very old HP Pavilion DV8000 laptop (2005 vintage). I'm currently booting LM 17 from a USB stick .... I have LM 13 installed on the laptop

This laptop has a Broadcom BCM4318 802.11 a/b/g PCI Express wireless card.

I attempted to install the drivers for my wlan using this guide:

http://linux-bsd-sharing.blogspot.co.nz ... m4318.html

On the last command ($ sudo echo "b43" >> /etc/modules ), I get "bash: /etc/modules: Permission denied"

I see a comment on the above page saying "Then simply edit /etc/modules as root and add b43 to it. "

But I do not see /etc/modules in the bootable USB. There is a /etc/modules-load.d

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Tim

I would follow the instructions from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2214110 for your broadcom card as they are usually on the money

Hi Kiwi Tim; I would endorse entirely what Jeremy advised you;

chili55 advises to remove if you previously installed the bcmwl kernel source package, you will need to remove it by using the purge method:
sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source
..........seems like your attempted install did not work but the above command should not hurt ..........

then if new install chili advises
sudo apt-get update
then you need linux-firmware-nonfree for the 4318 so the command is
sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree

Thanks a lot!

"sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree" did it. Wlan is all good now.

Very happy.

Thanks again!
