<Solved> Motorola WPC1810G

Post by truebda »

Hello All:

3rd time is the charm. Apparantly an Administrator didn't put my post up because I didn't follow the instructions to run mintwifi.py. Earlier, I couldn't find the program, but in the meantime I have successfully launched it and can post the results below.

If I read this right.... the OS isn't seeing the wifi card.

I think it's Broadcom based.... so it probably needs a special driver,e tc. But I don't know how to do that. Perhaps someone can illuminate me.

Appreciate it greatly.

Thanks, Dave

Hi,

yes the broadcom card needs additional drivers.
open terminal and run this

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install linux-firmware-nonfree

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe -r b43 ssb

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe b43
give it a couple of seconds and the wifi light should come up (make sure the wifi is turned on bios or switch)

Hi PatH57;:

thanks very muchfor the super support. I copied and pasted the individual commands into a terminal and seemed to get proper responses. Below I have posted the session and responses.

You then said: "give it a couple of seconds and the wifi light should come up (make sure the wifi is turned on bios or switch)"

Not exactly sure what that means.... there is no physical light on the card (that I can see... it's a desktop) and I don't see any kind of light on the LinuxMint screen. I left clicked on the network icon in the taskbar (right hand side) and selected Network Connections. Deleted my earlier installed WiFi connection and re-installed it. Still nothing and am still connected to the ethernet.

I'll go ahead and post this.... then reboot and see if that did anything. Maybe it needs to reboot.

PatH57: Rebooted, but still didn't come up.

I will do the

thing again and post the results

While waiting I've been pooking around on the net and found this about the Broadcom Corporation BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Controller.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Broad ... ireless%29

Did an lspci -vvnn and found the following info about the Broadcom pci device
#################################################################
05:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Controller [14e4:4320] (rev 03)
Subsystem: Motorola Device [1057:7010]
Control: I/O- Mem+ BusMaster+ SpecCycle- MemWINV- VGASnoop- ParErr- Stepping- SERR- FastB2B- DisINTx-
Status: Cap- 66MHz- UDF- FastB2B- ParErr- DEVSEL=fast >TAbort- <TAbort- <MAbort- >SERR- <PERR- INTx-
Latency: 32
Interrupt: pin A routed to IRQ 20
Region 0: Memory at f9100000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable)
Kernel driver in use: wl
################################################################

The article above says the following
#############################################
For these chips, to use the b43 driver you'll need to:

sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source broadcom-sta-common broadcom-sta-source
sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-installer

Then reboot, and you should have wireless!
#############################################

I'll wait for PatH57 and maybe these 2 commands need to be implemented?
Sounds like purging something and then installing "b43-fwcutter" .... whatever that is

Hi Dave.

try it. sometimes it does happen that the wrong driver is installed by default, this will "purge" the system and force the b43 driver) It's what I would have suggested as next step anyway.

PatH57:

Well, that did the trick. Wireless working fine now. Good support.
Thank you very much.
