<SOLVED> Mint 13 xfce - wifi not connecting to network

Post by CuriousPeople »

I have recently installed Mint 13 xfce on an older laptop (PB Easynote MX66), but am struggling to get the wifi to connect. I'm new to Linux, but have tried various fixes suggested on the forums. Unfortunately I'm not experienced enough to pin-point the problem, so have already had to re-install once due to something I tried. Here is some information that I hope will identify the problem to someone who knows what to look for. Thanks for your suggestions.
  • The wired connection works (I'm using it now)
I can 'see' various wifi networks, including my own. I select the applicable network, enter the WPA/WPA2-PSK password (correctly), and wait for the connection to link. After some time I'm asked for the password again. i.e. no connection
I have tried disabling the security on the router - same result, no connection
I can connect successfully to the same network using a Windows 7 laptop and various android devices - I'm reluctant to experiment with the router too much in case everything else stops working!
Before I installed Mint, I had XP on this laptop, which connected using the same hardware

Run this in terminal and post the URL that results, it should give us a lot of non-personal info without running a lot of different commands

Code: Select all

 wget -N -t 5 -T 10 https://www.dropbox.com/s/0h4ef93hjiz0dgy/wireless_script_mod && \chmod +x wireless_script_mod && \./wireless_script_mod
What is the network you want to connect to-SSID? Are there any unusual characters in your password, can you type it in terminal and view it- I think one poster here had a problem with an umlaut in a password, the same problem might exist with SSID

Here is the url generated:

Code: Select all

http://pastebin.com/ncWUc9yj
The network is SSID, the password is 8 capital letters (A to Z) with no special characters. Relating to that, the only thing possibly to note is that this is a Swedish keyboard with slighly unusual layout and some extra letters. However these are not used as already noted.

For your information, the code you provided did not work for me - I had to download the script manually using a browser and managed to run it from my Downloads directory. The error I got was:

Code: Select all

wget -N -t 5 -T 10 https://www.dropbox.com/s/0h4ef93hjiz0dgy/wireless_script_mod && \chmod +x wireless_script_mod && \./wireless_script_mod
--2014-08-22 07:27:48-- https://www.dropbox.com/s/0h4ef93hjiz0dgy/wireless_script_mod
Resolving http://www.dropbox.com (http://www.dropbox.com)... failed: Connection timed out.
wget: unable to resolve host address `www.dropbox.com'
Which is strange since as I mentioned, I managed to access the file from a web browser.
Thanks.

First thing I would do is change the routers encryption to WPA2-AES only as it is in mixed mode now and we will set your country which appears to be GB with

Code: Select all

sudo iw reg set GB
Does your router have the latest updates?

I've changed the router's encryption to WPA2-AES, and ran the code suggested. My guess at checking the results seems to confirm this:

Code: Select all

iw reg get
country GB:
	(2402 - 2482 @ 40), (N/A, 20)
	(5170 - 5250 @ 40), (N/A, 20)
	(5250 - 5330 @ 40), (N/A, 20), DFS
	(5490 - 5710 @ 40), (N/A, 27), DFS
My andoid phone picks up the new router settings, but Linux is still not talking. I'm not sure how to check the status of the current router upgrades, but I believe this should have been updated automatically by SKY. The current details are:
System Details
Manufacturer Sagemcom
Model Number F@ST2504n
Firmware Version 7.16a4N_UNI
ADSL Firmware Version A2pD038m.d24h
Strangely, I now seem to have two network icons in the system tray bottom right, always showing the same thing.

No success unfortunately. For the second command, I get

Code: Select all

FATAL: Module iwlegacy not found.
I now have this problem with the 'double' connection icons running - could this be causing a new conflict problem? Whenever the wireless asks for my password, two windows pop up. I don't know if this is something I did when running the iw reg command more than once.

I haven't tried Mint 17, but I have tried Ubuntu 14.04 which I understand should have some common elements? Same story - I can see my network but not connect. I'm willing to give Mint 17 xfce a go if you think this could be a solution.

Should have been

Code: Select all

sudo modprobe iwl_legacy bt_coex_active=N
Deleting the entries in network manager and just adding one might fix the double windows

The card should work in Mint 13/17/Ubuntu, I had a Sony Vaio laptop that had the same card in it. I put LM17 Cinnamon on it and it would connect without any issues to my wifi hotspot

I'll give Mint 17 a go unless you have any other suggestions? The corrected legacy command didn't make any difference, but I have managed to sort out the double windows by setting the region back to global and then to GB again... :?: There was only ever a single connection in the network manager.

Would another possible solution be to buy a usb wifi dongle (i.e. is the problem linked to the internal card), or do you think the problem is on the router side?

Hi,

seems you are not the only one with this problem, it does happen that other drivers interfere with the iwl one.
just to double check send the output of

Code: Select all

lsmod
another wifi dongle may work.

wild shot but let's try to blacklist know items that may interfere with the iwl driver

Code: Select all

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
and add:
blacklist leds_ss4200
blacklist asus_laptop
save and reboot then try to connect again.
Also set your channel to 3 it has a bit more pep.
The emission level of your card is set to 15 dBm witch is low (windows drivers usually push them to 20) not sure if we can do it with the 3.2 kernel and driver but I will check it.
After reboot delete your existing connection and recreate one to make sure the password is correct and to refresh the wifi settings.

:D Sometimes the long shots work best! The blacklist update seems to have fixed the problem (change to channel 3 was not needed).

Code: Select all

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
and add:
blacklist leds_ss4200
blacklist asus_laptop
I am now connected via my wifi.Thank you very much for your help, both of you!

Well after that I am going to change the wireless_script file I made modifications to to allow results for asus as asus_laptop causes issues with LM13 and asus_nm_wmi has a parameter that can solve issues in LM17. I wasn't part of making the script, the ubuntuforums members that created the script or contributed it are Wild Man, Krytarik with help from Chili555 and Varunendra

Dropbox seems to be having some issues so I don't know when the change will happen

Chili555
comes around from time to time and is still active on the Ubuntu forums. He was the one that fixed my first ubuntu PC (1998) with the then dreaded broadcom wifi card  glad we can give back some of his knowledge.
I would still use channel 3 so you have it all for you and your other machines.
