<info> WiFi hardware radio set enabled

Post by con0549 »

I have a new Mint 17 installation and noticed a delay in boot, and reviewing syslog I see a 6 second delay in what appears to be WIFI radio enabling, although it could be the time the previous entry is taking. The install is on a Dell desktop system and to my knowledge it has no wifi card. Am I misreading what the line indicates and Is there a way to disable any wireless check since I wont ever use wireless on this system.

I know 6 seconds isnt huge, but when my whole boot time (excluding hardware post check ) is 12 seconds, that is almost half for nothing.

Syslog lines

Try something simple first, right-click on the network icon in your taskbar and uncheck "enable wifi".

Re: <info> WiFi hardware radio set enabled

Post by con0549 »

right click only gives 1 option to "remove this applet" - I am running cinnamon on mint

left click has 3 things

wired - set to on
network settings - shows wired connection on, a wired section and a proxy section
network connections - shows ethernet > wired connection 1

Can you run these two commands and post the output back here? We're looking for any sign of a Wifi device of course, seems like you are pretty sure there isn't one. But let's check.

Code: Select all

lspci
inxi -Fx
It could be looking for said "radio device" erroneously, but let's rule out hardware first.

Well there's nothing there that looks like a wifi device at all. But Googling your computer, "Dell Studio XPS 7100" still makes me unsure. Some of the results say built-in wifi and some don't.

http://hothardware.com/Reviews/Dell-Stu ... w/#!bHmo51
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0%2c2817% ... ?tab=Specs
http://www.pcworld.com/product/545028/s ... zable.html

Do any of these look like your machine? I wonder if any such wifi device shows up in your BIOS settings. Maybe it's there and just disabled so it's not showing up. If it's definitely not there then we'll have see about how to get rid of that during startup.

Re: <info> WiFi hardware radio set enabled

I took a look in the BIOS and there are only settings for lan > enabled, and lan boot rom > disabled

Those do look like mine. Based the back view pictures from the links, I assume the wireless card is just above the dual slot video since it looks like connectors for 2 antennas. My system only has the dual slot video card, the other 2 are empty. ( My system is fairly old, so either I bought before they started that offer, or got cheated ) Its my office system so would never use wireless anyway.

Try running this command after reboot. Let's see if the system log has anything to say about wifi. Post what you get back here. I came across a few other ideas that might help, but let's go one step at a time. This grabs the last few lines from the /var/log/syslog file. Looking for entries that have "wlan0" in there.

Code: Select all

dmesg | tail -20

Well we still missed it even with 50 lines, but your first post shows that it was in the syslog and I believe that it still is somewhere. The big question is why it's enabling Wifi on startup with no such device in there. If there's nothing in your Startup Apps or even in Services that would account for it I'm at a loss.

I found several web sites that more or less show "how to disable it at startup" but I'm not so sure they don't disable Wifi after the fact. It looks like it's part of your initial startup services for some reason. Why your Linux install would pick up a wifi device that doesn't exist and add it in like that I don't know. Maybe one of these links will help, but again, I'm not so sure yet.

Re: <info> WiFi hardware radio set enabled

Post by con0549 »

Thanks for reviewing and giving the links, I was able to get it to disabled by using "nmcli nm wifi disable" . It didnt improve boottime of 12 seconds which isnt a huge deal other than it was 4 seconds with Mint 15 so just something for me to keep poking at.

It does make me think there is a disconnect between nmcli and nm-applet since the applet on the tray doesnt show wifi or give a place to disable.

Im also still curious what it is seeing, but its most likely to do with the chipset on the motherboard.

Re: <info> WiFi hardware radio set enabled

Post by gtsfer »

You're right about a possible disconnect, it just seems odd that it would even attempt to start up with no device present. Motherboard... maybe!

Can you edit your fist post and add SOLVED in the subject. Someone else may run into it and it could help them out.
