wireless freezes [solved]
Hi,
I am running mint 17 64bit on a Asus x54h laptop.
The problem I am having is with the wireless connection. Basically aftyer browsing for a short time or trying to download a file the page loading or download stops though the tab bar for the page stiil shows loading and the download freezes with the download information such as the time remaing and the download speed still being displayed.
If I disconnect and then reconnect the wireless the everything works fine for a while (5 minutes max) and then refreezes.
Eventually firefox freezes as well as does the networkmanager and then the entire system starts not responding. If I attempt to restart the system after it gets to this stage it starts to shutdown and then freezes totallly with the desktop backgrond being shown. I then have to perform a hard restart.
Sometimes when trying to disconnect adn reconnect the wireless The network manager has weird sybols in it and is not responsive.
Thanks.

Re: wireless freezes
ok,
first I suggest you read this especially the part about your router and channel used.
Also check if you are using wpa2 on the router.
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=175809
also we need the log output for the card

Re: wireless freezes
Cheers,
The wireless router is on WPA/WPA2-PSK and the encryption is AES+TKIP I'll try switching to WPA-PSK2 with AES encryption.
The Channel is set to auto, I'll try different channels as well but might see how the WPA bit goes first.
Heres the output for the card.

Re: wireless freezes
also witch country are you in? seems the card spends a lot of time trying to auto configure itself for AU (not sure it really does succeed in doing so)
Re: wireless freezes
I'm in Australia.
It done it again after changing the settings. It seems to do it worse when I'm refreshing or opening tabs. I'll give you the details on what happened.
I was researching part suppliers for a freinds car and was opening 4 or five tabs which I then went through and clicked the parts section. Some of the pages loaded some started to and then stopped loading but still had the spinning thing in the tab bar. I disabled and renabled the wireless after which the pages completed loading. Then I went through and opened the model specific pages and started downloading a PDF which was about half way through when it froze again.
When I attempted to dissconnect the wireless the panel came up but I was unable to turn it off. I tried shutting down fire fox which worked but was unable to restart it.
Then the mouse stopped working but the touchpad still worked. clicking on any of the panel or desktop shortcuts wouldn't open anything though you could see the icon move.
I then proceeded to do a hard restart , reopened firefox restored previous session and everthing worked fine.
It does also freeze when woring on a sigal page and frooze twice when the only action on the laptop was a 70Mb download.
I probably should mention that I did try ubuntu and had had the same problem. I have also tried another wireless card with no success.
Do you think it may be something else causing it?
Thanks.

Re: wireless freezes
maybe it's strange that the mouse freezes. How is it connected?
let's have a deeper look
and run first so that you can see the end then run the following and it will update whenever/ if something changes from the above.
so when it happens you should be able to catch the errors.
let's have a deeper look
Code: Select all
lspci
Code: Select all
lsusb
Code: Select all
dmesg | tail
Code: Select all
watch --differences dmesg | tail
Re: wireless freezes
Thank you so much for your time.
Ok. I run a logitech wireless mouse but am able to replicate the problem with the mouse fully disconnected.
I can seem to replicate the freezing by going to photobucket and opening the browse recent page. Then if I open a couple of random photos in new tabs and refresh the browse recent page it will eventually freeze firefox from loading the page. If I then turn the wireless off and on mostley the pages continue to load (it does seem to slowdown the page loading considerably).
After repeating this 2 or 3 times the system freezes, sometimes fully and other times I can still use terminal and open other apps for a short time. If I try to do a normal shutdown or reboot thesystem will either freezeon the desktop or just have the background photo showing.
Heres the results with a before and after for the dmesg | grep ath test.

Re: wireless freezes
Heres a photo of the network display. This happens also when freezing though I'm not always able to get a screen shot. There has only been one other network advailable all day and currently mine (optus) is the only one.
Re: wireless freezes
ok,
I will dig a bit deeper into
Also I'm not excluding the freezing is coming from something else.
What desktop environment are you using? and are you using conky? (also what network-manager normal or wicd or...)
Another test we could do is to boot with your installation media and connect to the wifi, browse and play around for a moment (you can install addition software for this session). Let's see what happens.

I'm using the default desktop enviroment and network manager ie: I haven't changed anything since install.
I'll give the installation media a go and see what happens.
Thanks again.

Re: wireless freezes
Its Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon 64-bit so I'm guessing cinnamon and in themes it is cinnamon.
I just ran from my install usb and it still had problems but the syptoms were different. It'd freeze loading pages and after turning the wireless off and on the pages would load. After repeating this a few times the network would show disconnected but the applet display on the panel showed connected.
I was able to open and close other applications and even open and close firefox the whole time, though once the pages stopped loading thunderbird failed to connect to the internet.
Shutting down froze on the background picture and reuired a hard restart.
One other thing which may be worth noting is the pages got slower to load after each time. I did do a speedtest with my mobile phone when the pages were loading really slow and was getting well over 1Mb/s download speed.
I got one test result while the pages were slow to load.

Re: wireless freezes
this one will be tricky
let's really quick it off.
Could you please use this? open terminal and copy paste this:
It will download a script and create a file named wireless-info.txt or wireless-info.tar.gz in your home folder with wireless information so we can see the condition of your wireless at the time. The MAC address, WPA key and WEP key are removed for your security. Paste contents of the wireless-info.txt or wireless-info.tar.gz file at http://pastebin.ubuntu.com or alternatively http://pastebin.com/ then post the link here in your question.
and check this already.

Re: wireless freezes
Sorry for being so long getting back, been at work.
Yep I did check that link the other day, changed the router settings and wifi channel with no change.
I tried using a wireless dongle I had laying around and though I still had to disconnect and reconnect it was only once after a lot of repeating the same procedure I have been using to replicate problem.
Heres the link http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/8086976/
Would it be worthwhile trying another network manager and if so which?
Thanks

Re: wireless freezes
you posted the script but not the output of the scrip?
copy paste the command as I gave it to you and don't forget sudo as it needs to be able to write the output. (also use the dongle that creates the problem)
