something seems wrong with your firewall UFW BLOCK
did you manually configure it?
and what is your router?
also the first log seems to be incomplete?
run it again when it works.

Strange, but it is why I modified the older script to use pastebinit to upload

ok,

1) it seems that your AP and another one are using channel one
Optus 4G WiFi E589 B646 witch should be yours
BigPond63280B is the other one

2) the signal is a bit weak Quality=38/70 Signal level=-72 dBm (mine at 15 meters and one wall between Link Quality=62/70 Signal level=-48 dBm )

3) your firewall is blocking
http://www.mediamath.com/ has to do with marketing (maybe you have a software using this)
and 23.46.51.171 (university cambridge USA) witch seems to be a DNS server (some ISP are using them for DNS resolution)

your 4G broadband router has already a firewall build in so it may conflict with the default firewall on your machine.
for test purpose use

Code: Select all

sudo ufw disable
and

Code: Select all

sudo ufw enable
if we need it again.

to access your router enter this 192.168.1.1 in firefox. the default password should be "admin" set the wifi channel from auto to 2 or 3 and apply.

Now as this is a broadband connection it may have higher latency then DSL or cable.
run this for a minute and paste the end result back here (ctrl+c to stop it)

Code: Select all

ping www.google.com
@Jeremy,

I've tried the new script, it saves the file but doesn't upload it automatically. Will take a look at it.

wget -N -t 5 -T 10 https://www.dropbox.com/s/0h4ef93hjiz0dgy/wireless_script_mod && \chmod +x wireless_script_mod && \./wireless_script_mod

OK.
Firewall is disabled and I am on channel 3. I have no idea what meadia math is. I've installed/use Gpodder as a podcast client, Firefox , Thunderbird, Gimp, Bleachbit, Google earth and have installed wine but had this problem before that.
Heres the output from the google ping. The data speed is fairly slow at this time of the day from network congestion (if it makes any difference)

mine
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 40.663/44.826/74.304/7.473 ms DSL
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 46.351/139.419/763.279/130.042 ms broadband (direct connect usb or wifi connect)

yours
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 48.564/690.213/3617.299/773.110 ms

that is real high. Do you have another OS you could try? (but from the logs your card is doing its job fine)

@Jeremy,

you are on broadband if I remember? Could you send your ping result?

I have dual boot with windows7, I have tried windows a few times and it seems fine.
I've got a reasonably recent fedora iso which I can out on a usb stick and try. I'll do it tonight and test it in the morning when my data speed will be better.
I'm on wireless broadband. Can you tell me how do I get a ping result to send??

the ping is what we did? and you can do the same under windows, open a terminal (search for cmd, short for command) and

Code: Select all

ping www.google.com
but only send the last part of the screen as I did.

really good for broadband, how far are you from a transmitter? (if you know)

I was thinking about disabling hwcrypt but as the connection to the router doesn't show dmesg errors I'm not so sure.
Disabling N but again it seems fine up to the router.???
let's wait for feedback

I am about 7 miles from the nearest tower according to an app on my phone and it seems to be accurate.

I don't remember if there were any module changes to ath9k in the newer kernels but I have only had bluetooth issues with my Atheros card, it even works fine with TKIP. I should try the card in my Toshiba and see if there are issues then

not sure what you did under windows? (just open command and type ping www.google.com)
anyway both fedora and mint show that your connection has a high latency witch may explain the problems you see.
We will try to slowdown your card and disable some "features" not ideal but with the connection you have newer OS may have problems maintaining a stable connection. I will do some more checks and come back.

no need to be sorry, you are learning how to use the system.
ok now follow exactly my instructions or we will do a mess (if you see any error STOP and come back here with the details of the error)

First thing since we disabled the firewall and changed the channel has the situation improved?
