Check out this thread on how to upgrade http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=168017
Backup the entire hard drive before as people have had there entire drive erased because of one little mistake, or you could choose to make it a triple boot if you have the space available by choosing install mint along side like you probably did to install LM16

Re: WiFi Networks device not managed - Mint 16 on Lenovo X2
still puzzled by the fact that it just did happen to loose connection....
Is the router form your ISP? in this case some ISPs push updates to the router.
Also try this.
Could you please use this? open terminal and copy paste this:
It will download a script and create a file named wireless-info.txt or wireless-info.tar.gz in your home folder with wireless information so we can see the condition of your wireless at the time. The MAC address, WPA key and WEP key are removed for your security. Paste contents of the wireless-info.txt or wireless-info.tar.gz file at http://pastebin.ubuntu.com or alternatively http://pastebin.com/ then post the link here in your question.

Re: WiFi Networks device not managed - Mint 16 on Lenovo X2
Thanks PatH57,
that looks a great resource on upgrading, I like the look of Method 3. I already have a backup, actually it is rather easy for that laptop, which has little in the way of downloaded software.
I will try out that script first - may not be this evening though, and re-post the output, maybe my long-awaited 'magic bullet solution' will be obvious to someone who knows there way around the intricacies of networking
I do not believe there is any problem from the router, it is my own personal one (not the ISP), a FritzBox from AVM, it works without issue on numerous other devices (Wired and Wireless - there are on average 10+ devices connected at a time ) over a long period (this one has been active about 1 year, replaced a near identical model which ran for 3+ years before suffering a h/w failure). I can log onto the router and 'see' the laptop booting and it is clear that it can see the Wired connection but not the Wireless one.
Consider the evidence that if I boot into Win Vista or via the live USB of Mint 16, the same wireless card is working flawlessly with the same router. So, something in the laptop configuration is suppressing the WiFi from asking for an IP address, and this is persisting, even through numerous boot-reboot cycles.

Re: WiFi Networks device not managed - Mint 16 on Lenovo X2
had a fritzbox to for years and it was rock solid.
Only thing I can imagine is an update to Mint16 that screwed the network card driver....
will wait for the outcome of the scrip.

Hi PatH57,
managed to get a chance to download and run that script - very neat.
Here is a link to the output : http://pastebin.ubuntu.com/8030494/
Few interesting looking error messages !

Re: WiFi Networks device not managed - Mint 16 on Lenovo X2
this is really strange , check if wicd is installed? (package manager). Seems something is interfering.network-manager main process (873) killed by KILL signal
also let's try to reload the driver.
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install --reinstall linux-firmware

Many thanks PatH57,
I'm just going to try those commands to re-install the firmware etc.
In the meantime I found yet another command to look at state of networking - inxi
(I must say that there are SOOO many different commands to check things out - powerful but very confusing. )

Hi,
looks like the re-install of Linux firmware went OK, however, not sure if anything changed --- I'll reboot now to see.
The other commands - one went OK, the other gave a strange error message - see below.

you need to disable wifi first as it uses the driver
Re: WiFi Networks device not managed - Mint 16 on Lenovo X2
Hi,
I tried turning off WiFi with both the F5 toggle and the hardware switch (mentioned in an earlier post, and my personal candidate for what triggered this issue).
The command produce the same effect FATAL: Module iwlwifi is in use.
I reboot with WiFi off and repeat the command with the same effect.
However something has changed on the machine : Now the command service networking restart seems to produce the same output as before but no longer the same effect.
Previously ( I guess before one of those re-boots) when I ran the networking restart, a popup would appear about a Clock process, then the Network Manager would stop (indicated by a red bar in the plug icon in the system tray). Then the ethernet connection would start to work.
Now, no popup, the Network Manager continues to work and (dash it !) the ethernet connection does not work.
I don't know if this is relevant or not, I will mention it :
when the issue first arose, it presented itself as follows : the machine would take a long time to boot , I am copying a description from someone else's post since it does a better job than I could of explaining it :
Now somewhere along the line, I managed to overcome some of those issue, but I think I was masking symptoms not the issue itself. Noticeable that the first message is appearing still, but only briefly - don' t know if that is normal or not.
Anyhoo overall, I am getting the impression the machine is well & truly stuffed as it stands and only a re-image will move things on.
Unless that last bit of info spurs any thoughts or ideas to investigate, I will re-image over the weekend, ideally with LM17 (if a test with a USB stick goes well) and using the Method 3 from that post you shared higher up this thread.

during the boot the system displayed two messages.
"waiting for network configuration" for a while then it says
"waiting an additional 60 seconds for network configuration"
after this the linux came up and the Network icon on the right corner shows "network disabled".

Hi,
why do you want to do it manually, just right click on the network icon (taskbar) and select enable wifi then connect to your AP.

Also i did rightclick on network Icon and go to "edit connections..." --> "add connection" --> "wifi"
then i add SSID and WPA key. and Saved it as "Wifi Coneciton 1".

Re: WiFi Networks device not managed - Mint 16 on Lenovo X2
well it is faster as it doesn't try to connect.i switshed off wlan0 auto in the etc/network/interfaces. Now the system boot up fast,
Reenable it and when you shut down disable wifi (network icon) ,reboot "fast" and then enable wifi again.
or you will have to make a script, insert some timing loops so that wifi enables first, then wpa supplicant loads and identify itself, daemon starts and so on. So you will spend a couple of hours doing your script then another couple of seconds waiting at each reboot for the script to run? all this to avoid the extra 30 seconds at boot?

Re: WiFi Networks device not managed - Mint 16 on Lenovo X2
because it's not managed. And manually enabling it only works if you do everything in the right order and wait a couple of seconds in between.Wlan0:link is not ready
So reenable auto management and use the network applet to switch of wifi when you shutdown. Again it's a lot of work to gain a few seconds at boot up.
