Mint 17 Wireless Option Greyed Out - ASUS EEE 1005HA

Post by tundra »

I've been running Mint 15 forever without problems on this 1005HA. I wanted to get the machine upgraded to LM 17 and all went well EXCEPT that wireless is now borked - this after a completely clean install onto the disk. nm-app shows the wireless option greyed out and unavailable - both under MATE and Fluxbox.

The device is there:

But I also see some weird errors here as well:

iwlist wlan0 scanning returns lots of wifi info for the local access points, so I believe the device is working.

I do see this error in /var/log/syslog when I attempt to do a service networking restart:

Code: Select all

rogram /usr/lib/dbus-1.0/dbus-daemon-launch-helper: Success

Ideas anyone?

Just FWIW, with Mint Mate 16 and 17 on the Asus X551CA, wifi is greyed out and not functioning until I close the lid briefly. Something about a quick Suspend clears it right up. Any luck on yours?

Oddly enough, the wired connection goes dead after a Suspend and can only be retrieved via reboot. Thankfully it's not used.

[If anyone is looking for recommendations, Mate 17 runs flawlessly otherwise on this laptop.]

It seems that a clean complete reinstall of LM 17 (which I did do in the first place) fixed the problem. There clearly was something wrong with networking because mate-control-center -> Networking was blowing up not just nm-applet.

I have no idea what happened here other than, perhaps, I clobbered some important file in /etc/ or /etc/networking when I restored my backups onto the original clean install. This is doubtful because I am quite careful.

The only other thing I can figure is that when I did the software upgrades, I did them from the cli. I *thought* I told apt-get to use the maintainer's copy of the various config files when asked, but perhaps I did not.

Anyway, unless otherwise noted by me, call this one "Fixed: But We Have No Idea Why".

My two cents worth. On Mint 13 all my internet connections worked fine. Once I updated to Mint 17 there has been nothing but problems. On my Asus X550 I have the exact same problem. I can not get the Wireless connection to work. When I click on the icon the wireless connection is greyed out and it says that the wireless network card is physically switched off. This is very strange because as this was a fresh install of Mint 17. I just reinstalled first Mint 13 again to check and then Elementary OS. They both have no problem finding and activating the wireless connection. Now that was sure that the wireless connection did still work properly I reinstalled Mint 17. And yet again the wireless connection does not work.
One time after I closed and restarted and forgot to insert the cable the wireless connection worked. It has not done so ever since. It does not matter whether I close the lid, Go to suspend or sleep mode or restart for the past week the connection has not worked. I have literally tried every possible setting I could think of or find online and so far nothing works. Using automatic setting,Roaming mode, manual setting with different addresses, netmasks and gateway settings. All to no avail. I have run all updates except the 4 and 5 ones. There is not much I can add here that I can think of. Any, ANY, advice or help to solve this would be appreciated.
